Abdul Nasser Madani also known as Abdul Nasser Maudani or simply Madani or Maudany (born 1965, Sasthamkotta, Kerala) is a Muslim political leader from Kerala, India; who has spent more than a decade in prisons, he is alleged of having involvement in 2008 Bangalore serial blasts, Surat and Ahmedabad bomb blasts.[1] Following the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, he launched the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with the stated objective of "Muslim-Dalit-backward caste" alliance. In 1992, Madani became the target of an assassination attempt, allegedly by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activist, in which he lost his right leg. Abdul nazer mahdani is involved in spiritual activity through his organisation dasooqiyyathul muhammediyya .[2][3] However, in some Muslim pockets in Kerala, Madani is looked upon as a hero and a saviour.[4] In August 2010, Madani was arrested by Karnataka police for his alleged involvement in the Bangalore Serial blasts and is currently lodged under judicial custody.[5][6]

PDP and its political recognition

At a young age, Madani began delivering the Friday sermons from a local mosque, at Sastham Kotta in south Kerala's Kollam district where he was born in 1965. His oratorical skills were well received, and he soon built up a following.[4] He subsequently formed Islamic Seva Sangh and later launched the P.D.P. to forge a broad Muslim-Dalit-backward alliance.[4]Communist Party of India (Marxist) forged alliance[7] with PDP at various elections in the kerala state. The PDP also won few seats in the council elections.[8]

Assembly resolution

The Kerala assembly on March 16, 2006 passed a unanimous resolution seeking the release of Abdul Nasser Madani, on “humanitarian” grounds.[9]

Controversies

Islamic Seva Sangh

Madani had set up the Islamic Seva Sangh in 1989. It was banned in 1992 for alleged subversive act[10] along with RSS,[11] SIMI, Jamath Islami and Shiv Sena following the Babri Masjid demolition.[4]

Alleged connections with Thadiyantavide Nazeer

Investigators say that suspected south India commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba Thadiyantavide Nazeer[12][13] came into militancy through the Islamic Seva Sangh (ISS) founded by Madani. After the banning of ISS, Madani formed the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Nazeer became its active member.[13] Nazeer is suspected to have established links with LeT[13][14] and was picked up by the Bangladeshi authorities and handed over to the BSF at its outpost on the Meghalaya border.[13] According to Kerala police, Madani's wife Sufiya had plotted and funded the bus burning at Kalamassery, off Kochi on September 9, 2005, to send a strong message to the Tamil Nadu government after she learnt about her husband's "plight" in the high-security jail in Coimbatore. This was allegedly choreographed by Nazeer.[13]

False allegation on Coimbatore blast case

He was falsely alleged in the Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case held on February 14, 1998 that killed 58 people. Madani was imprisoned for nine years as an undertrial. However, Madani was acquitted of all charges.[15] Madani charged that there is an hidden political agenda in connecting him with the coimbatore blast case.[16]

High Court and Supreme observations in Bangalore blast case

Madani is at present lodged in Karnataka jail and is in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts and similar incidents in Ahmedabad, Surat and Jaipur. Two persons were killed and 20 injured when the blasts rocked the cyber city at nine locations in 2008.[17] As per Karnataka state Home Minister V S Acharya, Madani also allegedly admitted role in the 2010 Bangalore stadium bombing on April 17, 2010,[18] which he had denied earlier.[19][20] After a court issued a fresh non-bailable warrant,[21] he proffered to surrender so as to avoid 'unpleasant situations' when he was to be arrested.[22] On February 11, 2011, the Karnataka High Court had rejected Madani's plea, who is allegedly a key conspirator in not only the Bangalore blasts but also Surat and Ahmedabad bomb blasts, on the ground that if bail was granted to him it would put the security of the state and the nation in jeopardy. At the last hearing Justice Katju expressed surprise as to how a person on a wheel chair could pose a threat if released on bail.? The High Court had said, "There is seldom ever that direct evidence is there in such cases. Conspiracy by very nature is hatched in complete secrecy otherwise the whole purpose will be frustrated.[23] The testimonies of witnesses, G Prabhakar, KB Rafeeq and KK Yoganand were quoted in the judgement dismissing the bail plea. Supreme court bench was divided on granting bail to Madani and posted the matter to chief justice of India to form a new bench to decide on the plea.[5] However, a Supreme Court bench was split over granting bail to 2008 Bangalore blast accused Abdul Naseer Madani following which the matter was referred to the Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia for the constitution of a new bench.[17]

Findings of Tehelka in Bangalore blast case

Tehelka, a political magazine finds that Yoganand a BJP worker, and witness in Madani case, does not even know that he is a witness in the Madani case. His testimony in the chargesheet reads, I have seen strangers visit the estate. Among them was a man wearing a cap. I had seen him only on television. I realised that the man was Madani. Some of the BJP and RSS workers said they had not seen Madani in the area. The testimony of Rafeeq, who had worked in the Lakkeri estate as a labour and was arrested by SIT in 2008 reads, I was subjected to brutal torture. They even gave me electric shocks. I was forced to give testimony against Madani. They threatened to book me in terrorism cases and to put me behind bars forever along with Naseer if I didn’t sign the witness statement. I had no option, I did it. Since then I have been burning with guilt. I know that an innocent man is in prison because of me[24]"
