Alan Lorber Arranger / Producer / Composer - Leading arranger in the early '60s, Lorber collaborated with all of the top New York record producers, A&R Directors and top artists of the day making hit records amounting to over 60 million dollars in sales. He created innovations in classical / rock fusion, East / West and jazz / fusion, with the ability to write for most genres. Lorber was the first arranger from New York City to record in Nashville (1963), bringing his New York-style arrangements to Nashville "picking." Later he brought various Nashville rhythm sections to New York to record with his New York musicians. During the late '60s he established the now historic rock phenomenon,"The Boston Sound[1]</ref>[2]
Among his own catalogue of orchestral recordings is the classic 1967 album The Lotus Place which was the the first jazz/Indian instrumentation fusion of its kind; and his innovatve 21st Cenutry (virtual) Symphonic Orchestra recordings, what he terms, “a new breed of American music.”
As creative director of his Iris Music Group music publishing companies and record labels, Lorber continues to release reissues of his vast discography, current works of past artists and the release of extraordinary new artist discoveries.
In 2010 IMG Books published Lorber’s “Benny Allen Was A Star: A New York Music Story", a work of historical fiction that is largely autobiographical based on his life in making early 60s music.
Highlights
Collaborations
1. With Phil Spector: Lorber made “Every Breath I Take” (Gene Pitney) which is historically documented as the real beginning of the "Wall of Sound." Lorber also recorded 30 other Gene Pitney recordings for Pitney’s label, Musicor, including “I Must Be Seeing Things.” He also created the arrangements for Pitney's 1962 San Remo Festival appearance, in which his song was the winner.
2. With Leiber & Stoller: Lorber collaborated with this famous team to make Mike Clifford's Top 10 hit, “Close To Cathy,” sides with the Coasters, and the innovative Clovers hit, “Bossa Nova.” They also made the first recording with Appalachian Poet/artist Billy Eddy Wheeler of his famous “The Rev. Mr. Black.”
3. With Don Kirshner and Al Nevins: Lorber, as Music Director of the Aldon Music stable of artists, created hit singles for Neil Sedaka, including the #1 single “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Next Door To An Angel” and twelve others, producing over 7 million units sold. Lorber also recorded albums and singles with Tony Orlando and Barry Mann.
4. With Luther Dixon: A&R Director of Scepter Records commissioned Lorber to record “Mama Said” and “A Thing Of The Past” for the Shirelles; “I Wake Up Crying” for Chuck Jackson;” “Human” with Tommy Hunt; and “Killer Joe” for the Rocky Fellers. Lorber also made the hit follow-up albums for these respective artists.
5. With Shelby Singleton: Singleton, at that time was A&R Director for Mercury Records, for which Lorber made Clyde McPhatter's classic ”Deep In The Heart Of Harlem” and the famous follow-up album “Songs Of The Big City.” It was Singleton, originally from Nashville, who brought Lorber there to record Teresa Brewer, and artist Brian Hyland (“Here's To Our Love”), and in New York, to record Lesley Gore's hit single “Young Love” and the “All About Love” album. Lorber also created the spectacular orchestral arrangement for Brook Benton singing Burt Bacharach’s title song for the Paramount Pictures and single, “A House Is Not A Home.” Also, for the Mercury subsidiary Smash Records with independent producers Feldman, Goldstein & Gotterher (FGG), Lorber recorded the Angels' hit “I Adore Him” and various cuts for their follow-up albums.
6. With Kapp Records A&R Directors Allen Stanton and later, Tom Catalano: Lorber made the Top-5 Johnny Cymbal hit “Mr. Bass Man” and “Teen Age Heaven” and title song for the film “Robinson Caruso on Mars.” For Lenny Welch's Lorber made “Darling Take Me Back” and “Two Different Worlds” ”Run To My Lovin’ Arms;” and the title song for the TV series “Coronet Blue.” With Ruby and the Romantics', Lorber made the classic “Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore,” and Ronnie Dio’s (Dio) hit “Smiling By Day.”
7. With George Goldner: Industry legend Goldner hired Lorber for his recordings at Roulette and then his Gone / End labels, for which Lorber made Lou Christie's “You And I Have The Right To Cry” and other chart singles; Joey Dee albums, “Dance, Dance, Dance” and “Let's Party;” and, for Gone, the Bobbettes “Teach Me Tonight;” the Chantels “To Live My Life Again” and “Mon Cherie Au Revoir;” and Top 10 singles and albums for Ral Donner including, “I Didn’t Figure On Him,” “Half Heaven Half Heartache,” and “She's Everything.”
8. With Hy Weiss: For this equally famous music pioneer, Lorber created hits for the Earls “Eyes” and “Never,” and Arthur Prysock’s “My Special Prayer” for Weiss' Old Town Records.
9. Brunswick Records: Lorber’s many innovative recordings with Jackie Wilson for Nat Tarnapol's Brunswick label, are today, in reissue, the most written about and historically important of the '63-'65 period of Wilson's career. Lorber basically combined a more pop-oriented rhythm against more traditional Gospel lines. “Shake A Hand” became a hit single, drawn from the Gospel duet album Lorber made with Wilson and Linda Hopkins. Other Wilson hits included “Shake! Shake! Shake!” which came from the multiple hit albums including the “Baby Workout” LP. Lorber also wrote the arrangements for Wilson's famous 1963 Copacabana act and collaborated with Wilson on many songs, which were included in Wilson's singles and albums. Lorber also produced blues great Big Maybelle’s “Cold, Cold Heart,” for the label.
10. Connie Francis: Francis first asked Lorber to bring his newly-honed Nashville styles into her repertoire creating the hit “Blue Winter”. Other worldwide hits Lorber made with Francis include film song, “Looking For Love” and “Be Anything.” He orchestrated and produced the premier recording of “Games That Lovers Play” which was written especially for Francis by James Last; and the biggest selling record in South America of all time, “Spanish Nights and You.”
Other Highlights
By 1964, now an established record producer, Lorber created the legendary group, the Mugwumps (“I'll Remember Tonight,” “Here It Is Another Day” for Warner Bros. Records. The group then split up, with half becoming members of The Mamas & The Papas, and the other half to become the Lovin' Spoonful. During the same recording session, Lorber produced “Do You Believe In Magic,” with the ‘Spoonful, and the first recording of Cass Elliot singing her now classic, “Didn’t want To Have to Do It.” Following the success of the two groups, in 1967 Warner Bros. finally released the complete Lorber-produced Mugwumps album.
The Lorber created 1967 highly successful "East / West" jazz / fusion album “The Lotus Palace”, featured sitarist Colin Walcott (later to become Oregon). The album was inspired by the music Lorber conceived for Clio Award winning exotic Chemical Bank TV commercial.
In 1969, Lorber, with MGM Records, established the well-known "Boston Sound," where 200 albums were produced with such hit groups as Orpheus (“Can't Find The Time”) and the Ultimate Spinach classic hit psychedelic albums.
During the same period Lorber composed many scores for ABC-TV specials for TV producer David Yarnell, including "Hit The Surf," and “The Great Mating Game,” where Boston Sound artist, Orpheus was an on-screen featured artist.
In 1971 Lorber was commissioned by book publishing and leading educational publishing giant, Harper & Rowe to produce the new public school music education teaching program for the primary school grades. The massive $300,000.00 project included a soundtrack for classroom audio/visuals based on an original story and songs by Victor Susskind and Dwight Ritter, entitled “Scotty in the Music Kingdom.” It included work books, life-size cardboard castles of Treble and Bass Clefs, and rubber play balls that when squeezed rendered actual tonal pitches for young ear-training. Unfortunately, by 1973 at the time of distribution, Nixon had cut the education budget and the entire project was scraped.
In 1981 at the request of NBC-TV Sports Director Don Ohlmeyer, Lorber created the first jazz/rock signature for the NFL-81 Monday Night Football NBC-TV broadcasts featuring Howard Cosell.
Footnote
Alan Lorber's musical career actually began somewhat earlier than the above implies. In the mid-'50s, when he was "fresh out of High School" (to use Alan's own words), he was hired as Music Director for Radio Station WMCA in New York where, in programming the station’s shows, the station became number-1 in the market. Among the DJs Lorber produced was Murray the K., then a “young-Turk” competing against the then King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Alan Freed. Murray eventually took over Freed’s time-slot on Radio Station 1010 WINS.
Lorber then established his first production company with Ernest Kelley—the first black/white partnership in the business--where they acquired and produced the famous Freddie Redd jazz score to the Obie Award winning Shirley Clarke play and film “The Connection.” Alan/Kelley Associates also published the Top-5 Maxine Brown hit “Funny” and produced the hit R&B group The Cashmeres, including their hit, “Satisfied Part I & II.”
