South University is a for-profit university owned by Education Management Corporation (EDMC) with programs in business, health care, design, and legal and criminal justice, operating at locations in Savannah, Georgia; Austin, Texas; Columbia, South Carolina; Montgomery, Alabama; Novi, Michigan; Glen Allen, Virginia; Tampa, Florida; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Royal Palm Beach, Florida.[1] It also offers distance education.

Academics

Accreditation

South University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate’s degrees.[2] South University is recently ACPE (Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education) accredited (https://www.acpe-accredit.org/pdf/reportofproceedings_jan2012.pdf)

South University reports that the vast majority of students are enrolled in fully online programs during a 2011 presentation to investors.[3] The majority of business and administrative operations for South University Online occur at EDMC headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA and Phoenix, AZ.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has jurisdictional rules in place that call into question EDMC's compliance with SACS policy as its business operations occur in MSCHE and NCA-HLC jurisdiction.[4] As scrutiny of online for-profit colleges and CHEA accreditors are under the microscope, jurisdictional requirements often ignored by accreditors may come into focus and compliance requirements often ignored in the past may be enforced.[5]

Colleges and schools

South University consists of the following colleges and schools:

  • College of Arts and Sciences
  • College of Business
  • College of Creative Arts and Design (at The Art Institute of Dallas and The Art Institute of Fort Worth)
  • College of Health Professions
  • College of Nursing
  • School of Pharmacy

South University's Doctor of Pharmacy program is one of four schools of pharmacy in the state of Georgia; the other three include UGA College of Pharmacy, Mercer University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy.[6]

History

The institution was originally founded by John Draughon in 1899 as Draughon's Practical Business College.[2] It operated under the name Draughon's Junior College until 1985, when the name South College was adopted to reflect its acquisition (in 1974) by the family of John T. South, III. The name was later changed to South University to reflect the institution's accreditation to award degrees at the masters and doctorate level.[7] In 2002, this name resulted in a legal dispute with Sewanee: The University of the South, which was founded in 1857 and had registered the name "The University of the South" with the U.S. Patent Office.[8] South University is currently part of Education Management Corporation (EDMC).[9]
