Sleeping Dogs Lie (originally titled Stay) is a comedy film written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, about a woman whose relationships are damaged when she reluctantly reveals that she committed an act of bestiality with her dog while at college.
The film has been cited as a favorite by filmmaker John Waters, who presented it as his annual selection within the 2007 Maryland Film Festival.
Plot
An impulsive act of bestiality from her distant past haunts Amy, an otherwise seemingly ordinary young woman with a bright future and nice-guy fiancé. But her fiancé has suggested that the couple be completely honest and tell each other everything. When Amy finally relents, encouraged to tell the truth by her co-worker and mother (neither of whom knows what she has to disclose), and reveals her secret at the home of her parents and misfit brother, all hell breaks loose.
After everyone learns that Amy gave her dog a bodacious derb, her life falls apart. Amy's fiance dumps her in disgust and her parents disown her. She begin dating a new man who does not know of her dark secret. After her mother dies suddenly, Amy makes up with her father. She decides to never tell her boyfriend about her secret, preferring to "let sleeping dogs lie."
UK release
The UK release was 16 March 2007.
The film has been renamed Sleeping Dogs for the UK release, dropping the "lie" part of the title which featured in the American release.
