NG2 glia is a type of macroglia found in the central nervous system, which is distinct from astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.[1] They get their name from the expression of NG2 proteoglycan on their surface. NG2 glia are believed to be the precursors of oligodendrocytes, although recent evidence suggests that they may have other distinct functions.[2] NG2 glia are homogeneously present in the grey and white matter. In white matter, they are found along unmyelinated axons [3] as well as myelinated axons, engulfing nodes of Ranvier.[4]
