Michael Kitces is a Financial Planner, commentator, speaker, and educator. He frequently contributes to industry publications,[1] is the practitioner editor of the Journal of Financial Planning, and is a partner in a financial advisory firm.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Washington DC. He earned a Bachelor's in Psychology from Bates College in Maine,[2] and subsequently earned a Master's in Financial Planning from The American College (Pennsylvania) and a Master's in Taxation from the University of Tulsa.[3]

He is a partner in Pinnacle Advisory Group.[4][5]

In 2004, Kitces helped to co-found NexGen[6] with Aaron Coates, Dave Demming Jr., and April Johnson. NexGen was established as a group of young financial planners dedicated "to ensure the transference of wisdom, tradition and integrity, from the pioneers of financial planning to the next generation of our profession"[7] and as a way for younger planners to participate in the larger community of established planners.[8] The group was later adopted as a Community of Interest for the Financial Planning Association, and Kitces was recognized with a "Heart of Financial Planning" award for his efforts.[9] [10]

In 2012, he became the Practitioner Editor of the Journal of Financial Planning[11] after spending many years on its Editorial Review Board.

Kitces has been profiled by Financial Planning magazine and The Wall Street Journal, in part for his research on safe withdrawal rates and determining sustainable retirement income based on market valuation.[12][13]
