Bjelica is originally a Serbian and Montenegrin surname. It originates from Old Montenegro's region/clan of Bjelice or The Bjelicas ("Bjelice" being the plural form of "Bjelica" in Serbian). It is nowadays most common in Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The surname originates back to the period of emigration of the members of Bjelice to other regions. Many clan members would, in order to preserve their identity, take the clan name as their surname instead of their original family or brotherhood (srb. bratstvo or brastvo) surname. The process of emigration and colonization in the 18-20th century made the surname common throughout Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as in Croatia to a much lesser degree.

Ethnicity

Most Bjelicas are Serbs and Montenegrins, although there are some [[Bosniaks[[ and Croats.

Customs and Religion

Most Bjelicas are Eastern Orthodox and their Slava (the Christian Patron) is Saint John The Baptist.
