This Is the End is an upcoming apocalyptic comedy film written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Jason Stone, and directed by Goldberg and Rogen in their directorial debuts. It stars James Franco, Jonah Hill, Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson as fictional versions of themselves in the aftermath of a global apocalypse. The film will be released on June 12, 2013.

Plot

After a series of cataclysmic events ravage Los Angeles, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson must face the true meaning of friendship and redemption as the world ends around them.[3]

Cast

The cast includes the following, all of whom portray fictional versions of themselves:[3]

Production

This Is the End is based on Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse, a short film created by Rogen and Baruchel in 2007.[5]

During production the film was titled The Apocalypse,[5] a name later changed to The End of the World. The film entered post-production in July 2012.[5][7] The name changed on December 20, 2012, to This Is the End, upon the release of its first trailer and poster.[8]

In March 2013, the release date was pushed forward two days to June 12, 2013.[9] On April 1, 2013, Sony Pictures released an April Fools Day trailer for Pineapple Express 2, which was in fact a teaser trailer for This Is the End.[10]

Soundtrack

Untitled

This Is the End: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the soundtrack of the film. It will be released on June 11, 2013.[11][12]

Reception

Owen Gleiberman gave the film a letter grade of "A", saying:[13]

"You could sit through a year's worth of Hollywood comedies and still not see anything that's genuinely knock-your-socks-off audacious. But This Is the End (opening June 12) truly is. It's the wildest screen comedy in a long time, and also the smartest, the most fearlessly inspired, and the snort-out-loud funniest."

Kevin Jagernauth of Indiewire, was less glowing:[14]

"Your mileage with the movie will depend on how much you like these guys to begin with, because even if you're a fan, the one joke premise has a hard time sustaining a full length movie....When Seth and Jay first venture outside in the early part of the film, when the apocalypse first arrives, it's funny and exciting because we're seeing them react to something absurdly extraordinary. But when 'This Is The End gets confined to Franco's house, we're just left with these five guys playing off each other with single note variations on their real selves, and there are only so many ways it can be spun....This Is The End is a vanity project that hopes that audiences will enjoy hanging out with Seth and the gang as much as they like hanging out with each other."
