The MetaWatch are smartwatches developed by Meta Watch, Ltd. Strata MetaWatch and Frame MetaWatch are digital smartwatches released in 2012 funded by raising money via the crowd funding platform Kickstarter.[10]

History

First generation of MetaWatch watches was released as a development system. Two models were sold - analog with OLED displays (model WDS111, style AU1000) and fully digital (model WDS112, style AU2000).[11] Both are provided with clip for charging, flashing and debugging.[12] For wireless connection Bluetooth 2.1 is used via TI CC2560 module.[13] As a serial RAM Microchip 23A640 serial is used.

Unofficial first and half generation was extended of Bluetooth 4.0 capability. Style numbers for these watches were AU2001 and AU2004.[14][15]

Second generation have dual Bluetooth 4.0, KXTI9 accelerometer instead of KXTF9 (less active power), larger battery. 4 pins on the caseback are multiplexed - can be either used with Spy-Bi-Wire (serialized version of JTAG) or serial out or GND. External serial RAM is larger. Clip provided with watches is now for charging and reflash only. JTAG clip for developement can be bought separately.[16]

Models

Second generation watches are sold under names Strata (model code SW12-1) and Frame (model code SW12-2). Strata has Water Resistant Mark 5 and Frame has Water Resistant Mark 3.[17]

Developers Support

Meta Watch provides SDK for developing embedded firmware on smartwatch under IDEs: IAR Embedded Workbench® for TI MSP430 and TI Code Composer Studio (CCS). The CCS IDE is available for free for Meta Watch owners.

Remote protocol over Bluetooth SPP is available and built into the watch firmware. For Bluetooth low energy (BLE) versions, the exact same protocol is available over BLE Generic Attribute Profile.

For Android, there is an Intents-based API via the Meta Watch Manager App.

For iOS there is an Widget SDK, any application in iOS can add and control a widget on a MetaWatch smartwatch.[18]

Source code of firmware is available on GitHub under permissive license[19]. Bluetooth stack is closed source licensed from StoneStreetOne.[20] Source code for Android Manager up to version 0.2.5 (released on Jaunary 2012) is available on GitHub under MIT License[21]. Since then couple of versions were published until current 1.0 (released on 16 June 2013[22]) without releasing a source code.
