Usage of "the"

Hello. Since you do not seem to believe me, here is an article from Purdue University explaining the usage of the article: [1] If you scroll to the bottom, you can read that "Some common types of nouns that don't take an article are: Names of languages and nationalities: Chinese, English, Spanish, Russian (unless you are referring to the population of the nation: "The Spanish are known for their warm hospitality.")" 2Flows (talk) 22:24, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

History of the English language. Randomuser112 (talk) 22:49, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You obviously didn't write "Lil Wayne is the American rapper..." in your revision here, so either you're inconsistent in your views on grammar or are being intentionally disruptive at Yeezus when making petty changes like this. If there is only one American rapper named Lil Wayne, then you would have made the aforementioned change, but you didn't. And continued incivility such as this will be held against you if should be blocked for continuing disruptive editing. If you feel your own changes aren't "bullshit", then use the talk page to air your grievances, because you are being reverted by several editors for grammatically incorrect changes. So there's a grammar mistake in the title of History of the English language? "Lil Wayne is the American rapper" is incorrect because he's one of the many American rappers. "Yeezus is an album by the American rapper Kanye West" is correct because there's only one American rapper named Kanye West. Randomuser112 (talk) 01:14, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is Lil Wayne not the only "one American rapper named" Lil Wayne? You're not being consistent and evading the question. And the only way your revision would be correct is if we worded it the way you're arguing: "Yeezus is an album by the American rapper named Kanye West". Dan56 (talk) 02:12, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're misunderstanding something.

  • Yeezus is an album by American rapper Kanye West - incorrect (adjective followed by a noun needs to be preceded by an article (the or a/an))
  • Yeezus is an album by an American rapper Kanye West - incorrect (there are not many American Kanye West's out there)
  • Yeezus is an album by the American rapper Kanye West - correct (since "by the American rapper" is followed by "Kanye West", the sentence implies that there's only one American Kanye West)
  • Yeezus is an album by the American rapper named Kanye West - correct (obviously)

Similarly:

  • Kanye West is the American rapper - incorrect (he's not the only American rapper)
  • Kanye West is an American rapper - correct (he's one of the many American rappers)
  • Kanye West is American rapper - incorrect (adjective followed by a noun needs to be preceded by an article (the or a/an))

Maybe we could get more input from others? Randomuser112 (talk) 14:56, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You cant compare each bulleted list; "American rapper" is not being used as a proper adjective in the second (a simple sentence), while the first has it as part of the dependent clause to "Yeezus is an album". Would these encyclopedias be grammatically incorrect in using "...by American artist...", for instance? Dan56 (talk) 11:13, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Dark Knight

Hello, and congratulations on the RM discussion closing in your favor. However, I hope you will conduct yourself in a more cordial manner in the future. I hope you will read Wikipedia:Civility and understand the importance participating in a respectful and considerate way with other editors, even though you disagree with them. One point worth highlighting: "Try not to get too intense. Other people can misread your passion as aggression. Take great care to avoid the appearance of being heavy-handed or bossy. Nobody likes to be bossed about by an editor who appears to believe that they are 'superior'; nobody likes a bully." I hope you can enter future discussions with a more cordial attitude.
