Life and professional career
Burkard Schliessmann has studied in the masterclasses with Herbert Seidel, Shura Cherkassky, Bruno Leonardo Gelber and Poldi Mildner.
He has earned international recognition for his compelling performances, featuring clarity and subtlety at the highest technical level. For his interpretations Schliessmann has received many awards and honors as recitalist, recording artist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician. His repertoire describes a wide range, from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Scriabin, the Second Viennese School until the Avantgarde.
Burkard Schliessmann has regularly performed throughout Europe, in the United States, Japan, China, Indonesia and Malaysia. He has been invited in many European festivals, such as the Munich Piano Summer Festival, the festival "Frankfurt Feste", the Valldemossa Chopin Festival, and the Maurice Ravel Festival in Paris, among others. As orchestral soloist, Burkard Schliessmann’s performance highlights include his orchestral solo appearances with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt, WDR Radio Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Symphony Orchestra Wuppertal and the New Philharmonic Westfalia, in addition to other orchestras. He enjoys great popularity in media and has been showcased at major German TV-studios, including the Philharmonie of Gasteig in Munich, the City Hall Wuppertal, and the WDR West German Radio studio in Cologne.
Burkard Schliessmann's hobby of scuba diving is as more than just a way of relaxing. After all, his passion for discovering hidden treasures, exploring the depths in search of dazzling colours, shapes and formations, is also influencing him and his interpretations in an extraordinary way: In his performances, Schliessmann seeks out fantastical forms and colours and converts these into sound, a phenomen which is called a synaesthete.
Burkard Schliessmann also talks about music. He has been invited in 2011/2012 for documentaries of his musical life, among these in the popular German cultural program "Doppelkopf" of Hessian Radio in Frankfurt/Main. He also had been guest-speaker in "Treffpunkt Klassik" of SWR-Radio in Baden-Baden 2008 and 2010 and also in "TonArt" of WDR-Cologne in 2008 and 2010.
