On October 3, 2013 in Washington, D.C. Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, attempted to drive through a White House security checkpoint in her black Infiniti G37 coupe, struck a U.S. Secret Service officer, and was chased by the Secret Service to the United States Capitol where she was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. A young child, believed to be Carey's, was found unharmed in the car after it was ultimately stopped.

Shooting

At about 2:12 PM, Miriam Carey struck one of the White House barriers at the intersection of 15th St. and E St. NW across from Pennsylvania Avenue. NW, and ran into a Secret Service officer who fell on the hood of her car and rolled off.[1][2] The Secret Service attempted to arrest her as she drove away in her Infiniti. Police gave chase up Pennsylvania Ave. and attempted to box her car in with at least four marked Secret Service cruisers at Garfield traffic circle on Capitol Hill grounds. Secret Service officers got out of their cars surrounded her with guns drawn—shouting orders. Secret Service officers ultimately shot at Carey as she eluded the box in by backing into one of the Secret Service cruisers behind her car and nearly striking half a dozen uniformed Secret Service officers as she drove away. She got as far as the northwest corner of the Capitol grounds on Constitution Avenue in the vicinity of the Hart Senate Office Building, where she was forced off the road and fatally shot by police.

Aftermath

A shelter in place order was issued for the Capitol building.[3] Both US Capitol Police and Washington DC Metropolitan Police revealed that they believed that the shooting was an isolated incident, and not terrorism.[4]

Carey was brought to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and pronounced dead. There was an 18-month-old child, believed to be the suspect's daughter, in the back seat of the car. The child was unharmed and taken to Children's Hospital.[5] The FBI obtained a search warrant and conducted a search of the woman's home in Stamford, Connecticut to try to determine was the possible motivation of her actions. As a precaution, a bomb squad robot was used to enter inside Carey's house at 114 Woodside Green.[6][7][8][9][10]

Perpetrator

Miriam Carey of Stamford, Connecticut was a 34-year-old dental hygienist licensed to practice in New York and Connecticut.[11][9][12] She was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. She obtained an associate degree in dental hygiene from Hostos Community College and graduated from Brooklyn College in 2007 with a degree in health nutrition science.[13][14][15][16][7] According to a family spokesman, Carey had previously been hospitalized for postpartum depression.[17][18] Carey's mother told ABC News that her daughter had been depressed since the birth of her daughter. Other wise, Her boss and friends, described Carey as a "non-political person" who was "always happy."[19] On the day of the incident, Carey was supposed to be taking her daughter to a doctor's appointment in Connecticut.[20] The FBI found two medications in her apartment, as well as a laptop, a flash drive and three non-working cell phones. Federal officials said she may have suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and believed President Barack Obama was communicating with her.[21][22] Federal officials said no weapons were found in the her car.[23]

Injuries

A Capitol Police officer was injured in a car crash during the chase near 1st and Constitution Avenue, and was medivaced by a US Park Police helicopter nicknamed "Eagle One" (N22PP) to MedStar Washington Hospital Center with non life-threatening injuries.[24][25] A US Secret Service officer was also injured.[26][27]
