The Institute for Thomas Paine Studies, or ITPS, is an academic center dedicated to the preservation, study and dissemination of the life, work and legacy of Thomas Paine. It is located on the campus of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
The Thomas Paine National Historical Association was established in New Rochelle in 1884. Another organization, the Huguenot and New Rochelle Historical Association, maintains Paine’s cottage as a museum.
The contents of Iona’s Paine archive were assembled over decades by the Paine Association.
In the early 2000's, the group moved much of its collection to the New-York Historical Society in Manhattan. Several years later, in a desperate attempt to raise money, the group sold some of its artifacts.
In 2009, the association approached Iona about forming a partnership to permanently preserve its archive. Years of legal work ensued; the state Supreme Court only recently approved a petition transferring custody of the collection from the association to the college.
Although the institute has only just been made official, Iona and the association have already collaborated on celebrating Paine’s life.
In October, Iona hosted the International Conference of Thomas Paine Studies. A Thomas Paine encyclopedia app is in development.
A website, www. thomaspainestudies.org, was launched.
