Lincoln Southeast High School is a public secondary-education school located in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. It is part of the Lincoln Public Schools school district. Opening September 25, 1955 under the direction of Principal Hazel G. Scott with an enrollment of 652 students in grades 7-12, Southeast has since grown more than twofold with 2,000 students enrolled in grades 9-12. Grades 7, 8, and 9 were removed when Pound Middle School opened in 1963.

Lincoln Southeast High School has the highest accreditation from the Nebraska Department of Education. It is a member of, and accredited by, the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1986, Southeast High School was recognized in the U.S. Department of Education's Secondary School Recognition Program as a School of Excellence.

Southeast operates on a traditional eight-period schedule. Its school colors are black, gold, and white and its mascot is the Knights. Advanced Placement courses are offered for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Renovations

As part of the recent $250 million School Improvement Bond Issue, renovations were planned for Southeast and are now finished. Renovations included the expansion of the cafeteria, the replacement of the roofing and windows, renovation of the performing arts wing, new classroom additions, new heating and air conditioning systems, and various exterior fixes. The renovations were started in June 2006 and were expected to be finished in mid-2008, but delays moved it back to early 2009.

Tradition

From the year 1971 up to present-day 2013, Southeast has been nominated for twenty All Sport Champions. From its beginning in 1955, Southeast has won 119 state championships for team sports in its different athletic fields. Since Southeast's last team sports championship in 2006, there have been several individual state champions in diving and golf. Southeast has since won the Girls State Basketball Championship in March 2008, Boys State Golf in May 2009, and State Football in November 2011. Southeast has produced dozens of Division 1A football players, basketball players, and many more college athletes. Many professional athletes have attended Southeast. Lincoln Southeast was recently inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Southeast has had many other state champions besides sports, such as drama and speech. Southeast's dance team, the Shirettes, have gone on to win national competitions multiple times since their existence began in the 1980s, including 2009. Southeast's cheerleading competition team also won the state title in 2010. Southeast also has an extensive music program that receives consecutive superior ratings in Southeast's two symphonic bands, marching band, and two jazz bands. Southeast has eight choirs that also receive superior ratings at numerous state festivals.

Music

The Lincoln Southeast Jazz Program is considered one of the best in the Midwest, and consistently produces jazz bands on-par with the best in the nation. Under the direction of Bob Krueger, the band has held at least half of the seats in the annual Nebraska Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Band for each of the previous 10 consecutive years, and has performed at the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival and the KU Jazz Festival.

The Lincoln Southeast Marching Knights, under the direction of RJ Metteer and Dave Young, have achieved success at numerous midwest competitions including the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree in Clarinda, Iowa where the band has been named best band for the last 6 out of 8 years. The band has also performed at the Blue Springs Marching Invitational (Blue Springs, Missouri), ValleyFest (Des Moines, Iowa), Festival of Bands (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), performing in the finals at each competition. The band has recently traveled to Hawaii, the Fiesta Bowl, and San Diego to march in the Holiday Bowl Parade.

The Nebraska Cornhusker Marching Band was unable to attend the Holiday Bowl and the Lincoln Southeast Marching Knights were asked to fill in at the bowl game. They played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team as they took the field on December 30, 2009 and performed during the game.[1]
