"One Bad Thing" is a song recorded by the Bee Gees in 25 September 1969 for the album Cucumber Castle, but was not released. It was written by Barry and Maurice Gibb.[1] The original copyright of the song was originally credited to Barry and Maurice, but the other released versions credited only to Barry alone.[2]

Allmusic's Bruce Eder described "One Bad Thing" as 'Beatlesque and sounds here are of a piece with the late-'60s Bee Gees output, and they're worth owning by any admirers of the trio who are interested in stretching their legacy as far as possible'.[3]

Background

"One Bad Thing" was re-recorded by Barry on 23 March 1970 for his first album The Kid's No Good, same day as "Happiness", but the album was not released, Barry was also proposed "One Bad Thing" as the second single from the album (after "I'll Kiss Your Memory") and its B-side was "The Day Your Eyes Meet Mine", but it was withdrawn. Atco Records pressed some copies of it,[4] and was distributed to the radio stations in Canada and elsewhere but was not continued and it was decided to focus on a new Bee Gees release and was released around August.[5] "One Bad Thing" was recorded by Ronnie Burns and released as a B-side of "1000 Years" and included on his album We've Only Just Begun (1972).[6]

Gibb's vocal is almost lost to the backing track. He also sings background and harmony vocals The song features a country-ish guitar.[7] Barry was heard singing in the intro, doubling the melody.

In the summer of 1970, Gibb performed "One Bad Thing" in a German television show with "The Day Your Eyes Meet Mine". In a short interview, he explained that both songs would be his next single.[8]

Cover versions

  • Wildwood recorded this song and was released making it was also the band's only single, It's B-side was "High Above The Town", originally by Rob Van Beek.[2]
  • New Horizon performed this song, released on Bell Records.[2]
  • Ronnie Burns covered this song that was released as a single B-side of "1000 Years", Burns' version reached #12 in Adelaide and #45 in Perth both in Australia.[2][9]
  • The Freshmen covered this track released as a single in CBS Records.[2]
