Rodney was born in Kentucky on his family-owned farm. He was first of his family to receive a college education. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in the mid-1970s. In 1978, Rodney began working as a stock clerk in his local Kroger grocery store. He had many jobs during his time at Kroger, some of which included price tagging items, bagging groceries, receiving product, and running the register. In 1982, Rodney began working at a Kroger retail environment in Charlotte. From there, he became chief financial analyst in the corporate headquarters. At the age of 34, Rodney was elected Chief Financial Officer. Rodney was key in the merger with Fred Meyer, Inc. in 1999. In 2003, Rodney was elected vice chairman by the board of directors. Dillon became CEO shortly after. Rodney was then elected to be COO in 2009.[2][3][4][5]
