Darkest Dungeon is a video game created by indie developers Red Hook Studios.

Gameplay

The game is a side-scrolling gothic RPG with a turn-based combat system where you are exploring dungeons with a four hero team. While you can only explorer with four heroes you will be able to recruit and manage around a dozen heroes from the local tavern. The heroes are recruited from among 13 different classes each class with unique skills and abilities. During encounters the fighting occurs in narrow passages which means the order you arrange the heroes in are important in respect to the heroes class and your strategy. As an example a crusader is a good front unit having both high attack and defense values while the plague doctor might be better further behind throwing plaque bombs to spread disease and confusion. Instead of leveling your heroes as normally an affliction system has been introduced where the stress from every occurrence in the dungeons affect the heroes. This can turn out both positively and negatively creating different set of afflictions for every hero. While exploring the dungeons the light of the heroes torch goes dimmer which means the dungeons gets more dangerous but yields better loot as well. When camping in the dungeons you have to distribute rations among your heroes and using time to protect the camp from ambushes and reducing the stress levels of your heroes.

Developement

The game is being developed by a small four man team but started out with Tyler and Chris coming together as friends and talking over a two year period before they started Red Hook Studies. The games theme was inspired by psychological traumatized heroes as Hudson from Aliens and the soldiers from Band of Brothers that goes through a transformation by the horrors of combat.[1]

The developers decided to fund the game via Kickstarter where it reached its funding goal of $75,000 within the first two days of the campaign.[2]
