Julián Maria Speroni (Spanish pronunciation: [xulˈjan (e)speˈɾoni]; born 18 May 1979) is an Argentine footballer who plays for Premier League club Crystal Palace as a goalkeeper.

Career

Dundee

Speroni started his career with Club Atlético Platense, in his homeland, but moved after just one year as a professional, to Scottish side Dundee. Dundee manager Ivano Bonetti received advice from an Italian contact to Speroni's potential. The move to Dundee was delayed for two months, due to administration delays in Argentina, holding up Speroni's application for an Italian passport.[2]

He excelled at Dundee, becoming a cult figure due to his cavalier style, often attempting to beat players using his feet.

Crystal Palace

With Dundee in financial trouble, Speroni ended up moving south of the border, to Crystal Palace, for a fee of £500,000.

Speroni only started the first six games for his newly promoted team in their Premier League campaign before he was replaced by Hungarian international Gábor Király after some poor performances. His next two seasons at Selhurst Park saw him largely play understudy to Király. When the Hungarian departed Selhurst Park at the end of the 2006–07 season, Speroni returned to the starting line-up and flourished, establishing himself as Palace's first choice keeper for the following six seasons. Palace managed to reach the play-offs at the end of the 2007–08 season and Speroni was offered a new three-year contract. He was also awarded the accolade of "Player of the Year" by the Palace supporters. At the end of the following season, he retained Palace's "Player of the Year" award.

In the 2009–10 season, Speroni again drew praise. His club fell into financial difficulty and finished the season in administration. This meant a ten-point deduction, and survival was only secured on the final day of the season. For his role in this, Speroni achieved a new record, becoming the first man to win Palace's "Player of the Year" award for three consecutive seasons.

On 10 December 2010, Speroni agreed a 312 year extension to his current contract.

International career

In November 1998, Speroni was named in the squad for a friendly against Japan U20 in Tokyo.[3] In December 1998, he was called into the Argentina U20 pre-selection squad for the 1999 South American U-20 Championship,[4] Argentina's under 20 team played friendlies against Hungary and Denmark. On 30 December José Pékerman did not name him in the final squad.[5]

Speroni made one appearance for the Argentina U20 team.[6]

Personal life

Speroni grew up in Buenos Aires with his parents and his younger brother, Ezequiel. He is married to Marina and has a son.

Speroni also holds an Italian passport, for which he qualified through his grandfather.[7]

Speroni owns his own restaurant in Purley which is named 'Speroni's' and is very popular amongst Palace fans.[8] The 'keeper also has a restaurant named after himself at Selhurst Park Stadium.
