Merrymouth were originally a three piece folk-orientated band which featured Mike McNamara on bass, piano, organ and guitar, Ocean Colour Scene [1] songwriter and vocalist Simon Fowler (guitar/vocals),[2] Dan Sealey (guitar/piano/vocals) [3] and later included Adam Barry (piano/organ/accordion/harmonica/vocals).

History

Merrymouth released their debut album Simon Fowlers Merrymouth on 26 March 2012. They were joined in the studio by award winning folk musicians John McCusker and Andy Cutting.[4] They toured the album throughout 2012 and 2013, including performances at both BBC Radio 2’s CarFest’s [5] for fan and champion of the band Chris Evans (presenter), The Mosely Folk Festival [6] and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival [7] Simon Fowler is no stranger to the folk world, In 2003, he presented McCusker with the ‘Musician Of The Year’ accolade at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards,[8] they become close friends with McCusker appearing on Ocean Colour Scene's A Hyperactive Workout For The Flying Squad [9] album in 2005, and joining them on numerous occasions at live shows. Subsequently Fowler went on to record backing vocals for McCuskers then wife Kate Rusby's “Underneath The Stars” album.[10]

Mike McNamara quit the band in 2011 to form a transatlantic band entitled The Little Ships.

Recent Years

May 2014 will see the band return with their second album, Wenlock Hill, recorded at Rockfield Studios,[11] a collection of new songs, which once again features McCusker (Violin), and special guest appearence from Chas Hodges of Chas and Dave with a full UK tour to support the release throughout the Spring and Autumn.
