Novofedorivka incident

On Sunday Night, 6 April 2014, the Ukrainian defense ministry announced the shooting death of a Ukrainian naval officer in the village of Novofedorivka. The incident which took place outside the Novofedorivka (air base), while a pair of two unarmed Ukrainian soldiers, reportedly drunk by Russian news agency, were on their way to the hostel where they were staying, awaiting relocation to mainland Ukraine, when they passed a group of Russian infantry soldiers guarding the entry way to the former-Ukrainian Air Base where they were previously stationed. An argument broke out between the two, Russian Spetnaz Sergeant Ye S. Zaitsevv shot dead a Ukrainian servicemen, identified as Major Stansilav Karachevsky of the military unit No. 1100 in the head twice with an AK-47 at point blank range. The other Ukrainian soldier at the scene identified as Captain Artem V. Ermolenko was beaten and abducted by Russian troops. The body of the Ukrainian major was also taken by the Russian soldiers.[1][2]

The incident is currently under investigation by a senior director of Crimean investigations Andrey Vasilkov. The case was opened under "murder". According to this source, the two Ukrainian soldiers tried to break in their former base and steal guns but were repulsed by Russian troops. A Russian soldier was reported to have received light injuries during the confrontation.[3]
