Hero Fighter (HF) is a beat 'em up game created by Marti Wong, who was one of the designers of Little Fighter 2. The game is made using flash and is still being actively developed and refined by its creator. It supports up to three players on one computer, and up to four computer on a network game mode, whereby players can challenge each other online.
Gameplay
The game features a single player mode whereby players fight with or against computer operated or human-controlled fighters. Hero Fighter has a riding system in which players can jump on to horses and monsters to increase their speed or strength with lessened maneuverability. While fighting on horseback, some actions differ from when the player is on the ground. Additionally, even when a fighter is knocked down, it is still possible to deal damage to the fighter. Furthermore, fighters are able to use objects in the game, such as boulders and the trunks of trees and even jump on them as platformers.
Fighters have both Hit Points (HP) and Mana Points (MP) as many fighting games. There is also another statistic called Stamina Points (SP). These points are depleted when performing certain physical abilities, such as running, jumping and flipping. Stamina Points are regained whenever a fighter is not performing an action that requires the points. Stamina Points do not decrease when fighting on horseback.
Development
Hero Fighter released its first version on 31 July 2009 as 0.1 version. It included the Versus Mode with Lucas, Shawn and Drew.
A network mode was implemented in version 0.2. Players were able to open game rooms with capacity up to for 4 computers or join one of the official rooms.
In v.0.2.2, a new feature allowed players to start a match with allied computer controlled soldiers (lancers), which allowed big armies in versus matches. Later versions added two new soldier type, archers and cavalry, and the ability to give instructions like 'follow' or 'move' to better control them.
Version 0.3 was a big game changer with the new Story Mode. At first only the three first stages were in game, with later stages being added with almost each new version. In this new version, the number of characters ingame had a big increase with the addition of minions, the later playable characters Giggs, Titto and Iczzy as bosses in each stage, and the small appearance of a few other later implemented characters as Taylor and Yaga.
Another big change hit the game in version 0.4 with the addition of a level system, locked characters and ingame accounts to record players unlocked characters and levels. Levels were first capped at 10, but with every new stage, the cap is increased by 2. Locked characters are unlocked by completing stages.
A new ride, called monster (also known as dragon or dinossaur) was implemented in version 0.5, with a few chances compared to riding common horses, such as being able to run over enemies and spit fireballs, but with the drawback of being much slower.
New mode added in version 0.65 called Battle Mode. It's a conquer the enemy type of game, which feature hireable troops, with each character having a different set of troops, resources (gold) to harvest, which are used to hire troops, and camps where troops are summoned. Each team, up to 4 team in a match, start with a single castle, and losing it game over for the team. The last standing is the winner.
Version 0.7 improved Battle Mode with some battle bonus and implemented a Premium feature, where players are able to purchase new exclusive characters. The cast of playable characters almost doubles comparing the last version, which were 10, with this version+premium, which features 19 characters.
Characters
Hero Fighter currently features a cast of different characters, each with its own attacks, advantages and disadvantages. The developer is planning to continually add characters in future releases, along with other content and refinements. The characters are:
- Lucas: An all-rounded fighter with special attacks on close range. Good with horses. He has an upper cut attack that inflict area of effect damage, a wind blade which can hurt enemies at range and a heavy sword blow to do maximum damage on one enemy.
- Shawn: Shawn is an archer who inflicts maximum damage at range but is very poor in close range. With a horse he can shoot while moving. He is able to use Phoenix Shot, which is an extremly powerful arrow, and can use multiple arrows at the same time spreading them at various enemies or making a rain of arrows when he shoot those into sky.
- Drew: Drew is a barehand fighter who is very good in close combat. His attacks are terrifying and can cause serious injury. All his special skills are meele ranged. He can grab enemies even when they are not damaged, and use heavy objects such as rocks and tree logs as weapons.
- Jenny: Introduced in version 0.1.4, Jenny is a spearwoman who is good in defensive combat. Can take down a lot of enemies while riding horses with her mid range attacks. Jenny has a whirl wind attack which can also shield her from attacks, a super spear attack that penetrates through enemies and an air blade attack similar to that of Lucas.
- Gordon: Introduced in version 0.1.5, Gordon is a battle axe wielding fighter. Big guy, with high HP and strength but his moves are slow, which make him hard to use. His special attacks are all very powerful and with a fair range which can also take a lot of enemies.
- Jason: Introduced in version 0.4. Unlocked completing Stage 4, Jason is a boomerang and dagger thrower. His attacks are limited but the boomerang is really powerful and can cause damage to multiple enemies and at a far range. His daggers are fast and very cheap to use multiple times.
- Taylor: Introduced in Stage 4. Unlocked by accomplishing Stage 5. He is the third apprentice of his master (Yaga) and is an expert in magic, specialized in support skills. Considered one of the most powerful and easy to use characters, thanks to his clones that can do all the hard work for the player while he keeps healing in safety.
- Yaga: He is the elder of the State of Dragon; he plays an important role on the kingdom. He knows a lot about the Sword of Hero and Lincoln. He is first seen defending the temple from Iczzy attack, but fails to stop him. Present in the game since 0.3, but not playable yet.
- Giggs: Uses a stick as a weapon, and can spin it very fast. He is the underling of Titto, and is always fleeing against the Dragon Tribe. Appear as the first boss in the game. Considered one of the weakest characters in the game. His attacks can easily be stopped by other attacks, which makes him hard to use.
- Titto: He has a spiked club and a heavy body that he uses as his main weapon. He is in love with his superior, the witch Sinan. Although slow running, can travel fast through the map using his skills where he rolls and hit enemies with his body. Players can see him and fight against him in the second stage, when he try to capture Lucas, Shawn and Drew.
- Sinan: Specializes in Black Magic and is one of the most powerful mages from Phoenix. Has the ability to summon bats that recover her health, use powerful offensive spells, and can mind control her enemies. She is seen in Stage 5 mind controlling Leo (plus a few minor soldiers), with the objective of stealing informations about the Sword of Hero, though she is defeated after Taylor come to rescue him.
- Iczzy: He is one of the Big Three from Phoenix Kingdom. Being one of the most powerful antagonist in the game, he fights with ice powers that can freeze enemies for some time. He is mercyless and enjoy challenges. His first appearance was while trying to steal the Sword of Hero from the Temple, where he defeats Yaga and Taylor.
- Heater: One of the Phoenix Tribe's Big Three warriors. He is very friendly with Iczzy and Raye. Specialises in fire attack. He has a fiery personality, but values loyalty. His attack can put enemies into fire, which than can hurt other enemies, in a chain reaction. Although his attack are strong, he also take damages from them, making it dangerous to use.
- Raye: One of the Phoenix Tribe's Big Three. Specialises in electric attacks. The most muscular and most quickwitted of the three. He's slow but can easily stop enemies with his attack. Enemies that get electrocuted can hurt other enemies in a chain reaction, similar to those of fire attacks.
- Leo: He is a swordman from the State of Dragon, brother of Lucas and Yaga's favorite student. His fighting style is similar to Lucas, just more powerful. He has an uppercut move that releases a pillar of energy, a wind blade attack, and a Triple Slash that knocks away enemies and may even set the up for a combo if knocked to a corner.
- Eason: The most powerful fighter in The Dragon Army and Yaga's oldest student. He sees Leo's potential and considers him a rival. Later he started an intensive training and increased his power, to the point where the sword was not necessary anymore. Players can play with him in both styles (swordman and swordless). It's also clear that he values friendship, Vivian's mainly, to the point that the rage caused her death gave him a huge boost in power to fight his enemies.
- Legge: A master with a whip. He sees Eason as his blood brother, though he is a man of few words. He is always near him and Vivian, and is one of the strongest heroes in the temple. His calm temper counter Eason's temper and sometimes can be seen giving him advices.
- Vivian: Sword user with healing abilities and closest friend of Legge and Eason, which she likes a little more than simple friends. She failed the tests to become a hero fighter and thus has a lower ranking. In stage 7 she is killed by Livermore, while trying to save Eason. Her death enraged Eason and gave him strength to fight back.
- Livermore: The leader of the Moore Clan, and controller of Azrael's sword, a sword capable of unvasing the seal to the Demon World. As Eason, he has two forms. The first where he fights with kicks and energy balls attacks and the second where he use Azrael's sword, which give him a few more powers, as energy beams and explosions.
Technical Problems
People have been complaining about a black screen popping up while booting the game. This black screen would prevent further loading of the game. This prevents the player from even getting to the menu screen. Reports say this error occurred with the browser version and downloadable version of the game. This usually requires a Flash Player update and a newer .NET framework, which can be acquired with system updates or IE8 download.
