Laurie Robinson is an American singer, composer and music producer active in the film, television, video games industries as well as the concert world. She is known for her frequent collaborations with her partner Emmanuel Fratianni, and her compositions and performances in the Video Games Live concert series.

Early Life

Laurie grew up in the Sonoran Desert, raised by her hobbyist musician mother and music-loving father. Her early influences include Bill Evans, Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stevie Wonder and Stan Getz. She attended University of Arizona where she studied under neo-classical composer Robert Muczinsky and pianist, pedagogue and Liszt scholar Ozan Marsh. [1]

Film Music

After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles and began work as a composer in the entertainment industry under the mentorship of composers Alf Clausen and Jay Chattaway. Her credits include additional music for Breaking Bad, American Idol, Futurama and the ABC Micro-Minis series. [2]

Video Games

In 2005, Laurie joined forces with Emmanuel Fratianni and Tommy Tallarico to compose the music for the video game Advent Rising.[3] The score was widely praised and was the recipient of “Soundtrack of the Year” by Play Magazine, a G.A.N.G. Award, as well as several G.A.N.G. and NAViGaTR nominations. .[4] She also worked on vocal production for Hellgate London and Beowulf, as well as orchestrations for the original Halo.[5]

Guest Artist

In 2005 Laurie made her Los Angeles Phillharmonic debut, performing the vocal solos featured in the music from the game for the inaugural Video Games Live concert. The performance was held at the Hollywood Bowl before an audience of 11,000 people.[6] She would go on to record her vocals for the Advent Rising segment for Video Games Live, Vol. 1 in 2008, which landed in the Billboard Top-Ten, beginning her career in the classical/crossover world. [7] The piece was recorded again in 2011 by the London Philharmonic at Abbey Road, resulting in her second appearance in the top 10.

She has since performed internationally with Video Games Live with a number of renowned orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony and the London Philharmonic. [8]

Other Work

In 2013, Laurie and her partner Emmanuel Fratianni were commissioned to create Portale, Symphony in an Airport, a symphonic poem to commemorate the grand opening of the Tom Bradley International Airport at Los Angeles International Airport. A neoclassical concerto grosso in 6 movements, the symphony was sponsored in part by Westfield Corporation, the City of Los Angeles, Ville de Lausanne and Canton de Vaud in Switzerland. Featuring 5 international recording artists, the commission represented a return of public and private philanthropy to the funding of new public works or art.[9]

Laurie is also co-founder of the Southern California Piano Academy, a Los Angeles music conservatory and pedagogical workshop dedicated to the development of music education for young people.[10] Laurie's video game concert scores for school symphony, choir, wind ensemble and marching band, are published by Alfred Music Publishing in North America.[11]
