My Son Is Gay is an upcoming Hindi-language Indian feature film. The independent film is written and directed by Lokesh Kumar, a filmmaker from Chennai, India. The film is initially produced by Anil Saxena and Starlight Unisex Saloon, further it will be crowd-funded. The film is an emotional journey and struggles of an orthodox mother and her gay son to accept his identity. It features Anupama Kumar, a noted Tamil actress, as the mother and Nakshatra Bagwe, an actor, filmmaker as the son, in lead roles.[1][2][3]

Plot

The story of Lakshmi, a mother and her son Varun, who is gay. Varun struggles to accept his identity and opens up to Lakshmi, who is an orthodox lady. The film is a journey of their struggles to accept the reality.

Production

Initially Lokesh planned to take this project as a short film due to limited funding and support. When he received funding to begin the project, he approached Nakshatra Bagwe to play the lead role, whom he had in mind since writing this script. He approached Anupama Kumar for a cameo due to budget constraints. Anupama was impressed with the story and decided to play the lead role of mother without any charge. Lokesh signed up two local talents from Chennai, Jayashree and Sharath to feature in the film. Auditions were conducted in various parts of country for other important roles.With crowd-funding, My Son is Gay is set to be India's first crowd-funded LGBT film.[4][5]
