arcserve is a leading provider of data protection software solutions that enable mid-market, SMB and enterprise customers to backup, replicate and recover unstructured and mission critical data across a hybrid of complex storage and recovery environments. arcserve’s recently launched next-generation product, Unified Data Protection, combines backup, recovery, replication and high availability technologies into a consolidated user interface, eliminating the need for customers to manage multiple interfaces or vendors while achieving their individualized recovery point and time objectives. First released in 1990, arcserve has built longstanding brand equity in the backup industry, with an active customer base of roughly 43,000 end users in more than 50 countries.[3]

arcserve has a long history, and was originally released by Cheyenne Software in 1990.[4] Today, the arcserve is one of the largest independent software vendor (ISV) developed backup software products in the market,[5] and supports a wide variety of platforms and applications, with support for advanced features such as Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) to dissimilar Hardware, Cross platform SAN Support for Windows/Linux/UNIX servers, source side Data Deduplication, Virtual Server support, server mirroring and automatic failover for protection of remote branch offices through WAN Optimized Replication.[6]

History

arcserve was first developed and released by Cheyenne Software Inc in February 1990 as a product used to back up other software programs and to ensure that data in the network could not be lost. The major function of the first release was to automatically copy all the information in the system so that mishaps such as power failures and equipment malfunctions would not destroy or erase it. During the early nineties, arcserve became Cheyenne's flagship product with massive[7] growth in sales. Cheyenne brought out an improved version of its core program arcserve in 1993 and began distribution through Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). During the mid-nineties, Cheyenne continued to release a series of new arcserve products tailored specifically for different market segments such as Macintosh and Windows users.[8] Software vendor CA Technologies, which was then known as Computer Associates, acquired Cheyenne in 1996 and continued to develop and market the arcserve product under the same brand.[9]

arcserve 1.0

arcserve 1.0 was released in February 1990 to back up network data to optical drives.

arcserve 2.0

arcserve 2.0 ran only under NetWare 2x, Novell’s VAP OS. But Novell's VAP Operating system was quickly replaced by an NLM based Operating system. The whole product fitted on a single 1.2 mb diskette.

arcserve 3.0

arcserve 3.0 was released in 1991 as NLM only and came on two 1.2mb diskettes.

arcserve Windows 1.0

arcserve Windows 1.0 was the first version of arcserve that was released for the Windows Operating System platform. It worked on Windows NT 3.5 and later on Windows NT 3.51

arcserve Backup r11.1 came in four packages based on the Operating System on which the arcserve Backup Server was to be installed.

arcserve Backup r11.5

arcserve Backup r11.5 came in three separate packages based on the Operating Systems on which the arcserve Backup Server was to be installed.

arcserve Backup r12 introduced support for VMware Virtualization technology.

arcserve r15 (2010)

The arcserve r15 release provided a varied range of enhancements to the existing arcserve and XOsoft (renamed arcserve Replication and High Availability r15) products and launches a new disk-based backup product called arcserve D2D. The products are also repackaged into the arcserve family of products providing better integration among existing products and with the new arcserve D2D product. With the current release arcserve Backup r15 integrates with arcserve D2D r15, arcserve Replication r15 and arcserve High Availability r15 (previously known as CA XOsoft Replication and High Availability) to incorporate enhanced disk based capabilities and protection for data in remote branch offices within ARCserve.[10]

The arcserve r15 Family consists of the following products:

arcserve Backup r15

With this release, arcserve addresses the cross platform SAN environments present within its customer base, thereby also providing a migration path for customers with UNIX and Linux based environment towards a Windows backup server. Also, the Infrastructure Visualization feature that is added provides a visual representaion of the entire backup environment. This coupled with enhancements in the Backup and SRM (Storage Resource Management) Reports in the arcserve Dashboard makes for strong reporting capabilities.[11]

arcserve D2D r15

arcserve D2D r15 is an exclusive disk based backup product introduced into the arcserve family of products as a part of the arcserve r15 release. It takes a single full backup of the machine or a volume and subsequently only does Incremental backups indefinitely. This is done using CA's patented I^2(Infinite Incrementals) Technology which allows Block Level Infinite Incremental Backups after an initial single full backup. It thereafter provides a consolidated point in time view of the protected volume to enable multiple recovery points. arcserve D2D allows application consistent snapshot backups and simplifies Disaster Recovery by allowing Bare Metal Recovery to dissimilar hardware.[12]

arcserve Replication r15.2

arcserve Replication r15 was known as CA XOsoft in its previous release. arcserve Replication r15 does asynchronous real time replication of file and application data. The software is a Host based replication tool that is optimized for WAN links. The production server being protected is called the Master Server in arcserve Replication terminology. The mirrored server at the disaster recovery site on a WAN or LAN is called the Replica Server. The Replica is a stand-by server that can be configured to service user requests through a manual failover.

arcserve High Availability r15.2

arcserve High Availability r15 was known as CA XOsoft High Availability until its previous release. The product includes arcserve Replication r15 and uses the same installed components (control server & engines), while the license key sets the different functionality between the two. High Availability serves to eliminate downtime that users experience by redirecting requests to a Replica Server when the Master Server is unavailable to service the request. The users typically are not affected and do not realize that a redirection took place. Failover and failback can be automated using arcserve High Availability r15.2

With the current release arcserve Backup r16 integrates with arcserve D2D r16, and arcserve Replication and High Availability r16 to incorporate enhanced disk based capabilities and protection for data in remote branch offices within arcserve. The arcserve r16 family consists of the following products:

arcserve Backup r16

With this release, arcserve Backup archives data using the new Archive Manager. Full and incremental backup sessions can be synthesized into one session. This release integrates with cloud-based storage. arcserve Backup provides a simple interface as part of the user interface to set up cloud storage as a secondary site for CA ARCserve Backup storage. This release also includes enhanced integration with arcserve D2D. This capability lets users clone D2D backup sessions to tape media, catalog with arcserve Backup and enable recovery via the arcserve Backup console to provide long-term, off-site storage for arcserve D2D backups and a single point of management. arcserve Backup r16 also uses WinPE to drive the bare-metal restore process, including support for iSCSI disks, the Windows Server 2008 cluster and x86, x64, and IA64 platforms.

arcserve D2D r16

arcserve D2D r16 is an exclusive disk based backup product and supports the following capabilities:

  • Explorer Integration for directly browsing and restoring files/folder and Exchange objects (mailboxes, mail folders, mail) from Windows Explorer
  • Copy Recovery Points
  • Backup speed throttling

arcserve Central Applications r16

arcserve Central Applications was introduced as a part of the arcserve r16 release. arcserve Central Applications provides a collection of common look and feel web applications built to extend the functionality of arcserve D2D.

  • arcserve® Central Protection Manager: Provides central management of arcserve D2D servers, including discovery, backup policy and restore from one interface.
  • arcserve® Central Reporting: Leverages the Protection Manager Microsoft SQL repository to report on CA ARCserve D2D as well as information collected from arcserve Backup dashboards.
  • arcserve® Central Host-Based VM Backup: Extends both VMware and CA ARCserve D2D by executing backups of virtual machines running on ESX, by a single installation of arcserve D2D, creating a standard D2D recovery point.
  • arcserve® Central Virtual Standby: Converts D2D backup repository data, by host, to either VMware or Hyper-V virtual machines that can are ready to stand up, versus running BMR or Recover VM.

arcserve Replication and High Availability r16

In previous releases, arcserve Replication and High Availability was known as CA XOsoft, CA Replication, and CA High Availability. Some of the key features include:

  • Full System Replication and High Availability: Replicates a complete Windows-based system including the operating system, system state, application and data to an offline Replica server running VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper -V Server or Citrix XenServer. Includes server and application monitoring with automated and push-button failover that automatically stands up the Replica server for high availability.
  • Amazon Cloud (Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)) Integration.
  • Secure Communication: Provides 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption across the network without the need for a virtual private network (VPN) or IPSec tunnel.
  • VMware vCenter Server v4 Support: Provides replication and failover for the VMware management system.

arcserve Central Applications r16.5 lets you protect Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 workstation environments. arcserve Central Applications include the following centralized management applications:

  • arcserve Central Protection Manager and arcserve Central Reporting can be used to deploy, manage and report on arcserve D2D in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 environments.
  • arcserve Central Virtual Standby supports “remote standby” across a Wide Area Network through integration with arcserve Replication. Customers and Partners like MSPs can now replicate arcserve D2D recovery points to a remote site and then automatically convert the recovery points to VM format and quickly stand them up after a production server failure for fast system recovery. This application also now supports failover of Hyper-V v3.0 virtual machines. Remote Virtual Standby does not offer the heartbeat monitoring and automated failover options that are available when deploying Central Virtual Standby locally.

arcserve® Unified Data Protection (2014)

arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) is a new arcserve solution built on the foundation of a mature arcserve technologies from the previous releases, offering a Service Provider-friendly solution from endpoint to remote archive site. arcserve UDP delivers comprehensive Assured Recovery™ for virtual and physical environments with a new architecture and user interface. Traditional backup scheduling policies are replaced by task-based data protection plans and deep integration with hypervisors to fully automate repetitive tasks. arcserve UDP is the first solution to combine backup, replication, high availability and source side global de-duplication technologies within one solution. The key features of arcserve UDP include:

  • Unified management console
  • Simple task-based data protection and availability plans
  • Agentless backup for VMware and Hyper-V (Windows and Linux VMs)
  • Support for physical systems (Windows and Linux)
  • Built-in replication and high availability
  • True global deduplication
  • Migration of disk images to tape, with granular restore from disk or tape

arcserve UDP introduces a next-generation service oriented architecture. This new architecture is “services” focused: data and system protection and recovery now become IT services that can be delivered internally or externally, by in-house IT professionals or service providers. The unified architecture consists of many individual elements. These individual elements can reside on a single server, or can be distributed or decoupled across multiple physical or virtual servers to provide a highly scalable solution.
