James Wright Foley (October 18, 1973 – c. August 19, 2014) was an American photojournalist who was abducted in northwestern Syria on November 22, 2012,[1] while working for the U.S.-based online news outlet GlobalPost.[2] He was beheaded by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant at an unknown desert location in August 2014 in revenge for United States airstrikes on the group.[3][4] His family, President Obama and the United States National Security Council all confirmed that a video of his death was authentic.[5][6] Foley's beheading marked the first time ISIS had killed an American citizen.[7]
Early life
Foley was a native of Rochester, New Hampshire.[4] He graduated from Marquette University in 1996[8] and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2008.[3]
Career
In April 2011, Foley, working for GlobalPost, and three other journalists were detained near Brega, Libya, by forces loyal to Moammar Gaddafi during the Libyan Civil War; fellow photojournalist Anton Hammerl was killed in the attack in which Foley was captured.[9][10] Foley was released from jail 44 days later.[10]
Kidnapping and death
He was kidnapped in Syria in November 2012; his whereabouts were unknown until August 19, 2014, when ISIS posted a video to YouTube depicting Foley reading a prepared statement urging Americans to stop their support for the U.S. government for its bombing campaign against ISIS targets.[11] The video then cuts away to his beheading.[3] Foley's killer then claims ISIS is holding another American journalist, Steven Joel Sotloff, and would execute him unless U.S. President Barack Obama halted airstrikes against them.[3]
On August 20, 2014, the United States National Security Council confirmed the video was authentic.[6] The day before, on August 19, 2014, Foley's family confirmed his death.[5][12] His mother, Diane Foley, said he "gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people".[5] Foley's beheading marks the first time ISIS has killed an American citizen.[7]
