Palmbomen is the stage name of Amsterdam, Netherlands based musician Kai Hugo. Palmbomen has released on NON Records, which a label he helped found with his friend Bear Damen[1], and French label Kitsuné Maison. Founded in 2010 by musician and graphic designer Bear Damen,[1] the label is known for electronic music with an emphasis on analog recording techniques. The current roster of artists included Bear Damen himself, as well as Palmbomen, THE BENELUX, Renkas, Marius, and HyperHyper.

Beginnings

Hugo debuted his music as Palmbomen when he and label mate HyperHyper were asked to fill in for a canceled artists at a music festival in the Netherlands. The two accepted the request and decided to call the project “Palmbomen”, the dutch word for palm trees. Besides reflecting the tropical, 80s sound of the music, the name was chosen , according to Kai Hugo, “because of the absolute absence of palm trees in Holland, they represent somewhat of a small detail of utopia.” This was not the case. I actually wanted to start a project with 'Swiere Mullers' and we actually did a little jam together. Then we came up with the name but never did something with the whole project. Then I got asked to fill a gap on a festival and because they wanted a name for the posters right away I gave them the name Palmbomen because we didnt do anything with that project. Then I started working hard to make some songs in a week connected directly with the lights and that was the start.

Moon Children and Kitsuné Maison

Kai soon made the new Palmbomen project his main focus, developing material for what would become his debut EP. Label owner and friend Bear Damen produced initial work for Hugo in his home, which also served the recording studio. Damen and Hugo captured an antiquated sound through extensive use of vintage vocoders, synths, and analog boxes. The result of these recording sessions eventually culminated the 6 track debut “Moon Children” EP, which was released on NON Records in July of 2010. A release party organized by NON at Amsterdam's Trouw included Palmbomen's first official live performances with support by Toro Y Moi and Memory Tapes. The EP received positive reviews from media outlets Vice Magazine, The Examiner, 3VOOR12, and others. Such favorable critical reaction towards “Moon Children” EP attracted the attention of french music and fashion label Kitsune, which included the title track on their 10th Kitsune Maison Compilation in November of 2010.
