North America

Guardians of the Galaxy earned $11.2 million on its Thursday night pre-opening, surpassing Captain America: The Winter Soldier's gross ($10.2 million) for the biggest Thursday evening start for a movie in 2014.[6] IMAX accounted for 17% of the total gross ($1.9 million), which was the biggest August pre-release in IMAX format.[7] On its opening day, the film earned $26.6 million, for a total of $37.8 million, including the Thursday night earnings.[8] Guardians of the Galaxy was the number one movie during its opening weekend and grossed $94.3 million, topping The Bourne Ultimatum's record ($69.3 million) for the highest August weekend debut in history.[9] Its debut weekend gross was the third biggest of 2014, behind Transformers: Age of Extinction ($100 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million).[10] After its opening weekend, the film was number one in its fourth,[11] fifth[12] and sixth weekend,[13] becoming the the first film in 2014 to top the domestic box office in non-consecutive weeks,[11] the first film of the summer (May–August) to be the number one film in three weekends[14] and the first Marvel film to be the top film for four weeks, surpassing Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers, both of which were number one for three weeks, and tied The Dark Knight for the most weeks at number one among comic book-based films.[15] Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst of BoxOffice.com said, "Guardians is just rolling right now. It's unconventional, it shatters expectations and there’s a real story to it."[12]

Its fourth weekend also saw Guardians of the Galaxy pass Transformers: Age of Extinction as the top grossing film of summer 2014.[16][17] By August 29, it had passed Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the top grossing domestic film of 2014.[18] On September 12, 2014, the film passed $300 million for its domestic gross, becoming the first film of 2014 to do so.[19] The film was said to have "injected life" into an otherwise lower than normal summer box office.[17][12][20]
