why is it called french curve?

anyone knows why is it called french curve?

practical usage

How about a section describing their practical usage - something I have wondered about since I first saw one (about 40 years ago). In this article there is a reference to the idea of placing the FC on a surface so that it 'touches' 3 or 4 marked points - and I didn't even know that much. Even though I took a drafting course, the French Curve in our geometry sets were never needed.
