Madhavaram is a village in West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, [{India]].[1] It is located approximately 12 KM from Tadepalligudem, its mandal town. [2]
History of Madhavaram
Formation of this village is dated around 17th century. Then king Pusapati Madhava Verma Brahma of Gajapathi dynasty ruling the Deccan and Orissa regions built a fort in Arugolanu village about 6 KM from Madhavaram to protect his kingdom from enemies. He deployed soldiers from northern Andhra to this fort and provided them with Agricultural land and housing sites. Those soldiers formed the village of Madhavaram.[3] One can find the ruins of that fort in Arugolanu even today. Since then it has been the tradition of the people of this village to join in military. During British Raj, around 2000 soldiers participated in WWI and WWII representing India.
According to many old citizens of this village Mahatma Gandhi once visited this village.[citation needed] A war memorial like Amar Jawan stupa at India Gate has been built in the memory of the soldiers from this village who sacrificed their life for the nation.
Important Employments
People from surrounding villages call this village as Military Madhavaram[4] because, at least one person from every family in this village has worked or working in military.[3] At least 2000 members from this village participated in first and second world wars. Around 91 soldiers died in these wars.[5] Joining in military is an ambition for most youth in this village. Agriculture is another important employment in this village.[6] Paddy and Sugarcane are important crops.
Educational Institutes
Madhavaram has a Government primary school, a ZP High school, a Government Junior college. A missionary school and a private tun school are also being run in Madhavaram.
Temples
A temple for Poleramma, Lord Shiva temple, Lord Venkateswara temple, Lord Kumaraswamy temple, a Vaishanava temple exist in Madhavaram. Poleramma temple of Madhavaram draws visitors from the near by villages.
Festivals
All South Indian festivals are celebrated in Madhavaram. Particularly the religious festival Polleramma Jathara is celebrated. People come to Poleramma Jathara from surrounding villages and also from neighbouring state of Karnataka.
Travel and Transport
APSRTC[clarification needed] runs buses from Tadepalligudem to Madhavaram. The nearest railway station is also in Tadepalligudem.
