Pandit Parameshwar Hegde (Kannada: ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆ; born 1956) is an Indian classical vocalist. He belongs to the Kirana gharana of Hindustani classical music.
Early life
Parameshwar Hegde was born in 1956 in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. He began learning Hindustani music when he was ten years old. He received training under the guidance of S.M. Bhat and Pt. Chandrashekar Puranika Math.
In 1976, Hegde went to Dharwad to seek advanced training under Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru, an exponent of the Kirana Gharana. He continued to learn from Rajguru for over 15 years.
Performing career
An 'A' grade artist on All India Radio, Parameshwar Hegde has been featured in several national broadcasts. He has appeared on television and is much sought after as a concert artiste. Now a resident of Bangalore, he is a major attraction at prestigious music festivals all over India and has also traveled on concert tours abroad, to the U.S.A, Canada, United Kingdom and the Gulf countries.
Pt. Hegde is also the managing trustee of Rajguru Smriti, a public charitable trust established in memory of his guru, Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru. The main objective of the Trust is to nurture and promote the development of Indian classical arts, particularly Hindustani music.
Singing Style
Pt. Hegde follows the Kirana Gharana style of singing, with some of the characteristics being raga elaboration in vilambit laya (slow tempo) and sargam taans. His voice spans over three octaves. Pt. Hegde's singing demonstrates a preference for slow and methodical buildup of the raga during the vilambit bada Khayal, focussing on clear enunciation of phrases, simplicity to ensure melodic continuity rather than demonstrate virtuosity.[1]
Personal life
Parameshwar Hegde currently resides in Bangalore.
