Dr. Joseph Mills Jones, is the current Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia. He was born in Sinoe County to the union of Mr. Joseph Humphrey Jones and Mrs. Catherine Cooper Jones. His father was a small business owner and his mother, a school teacher.

He did his primary education at the St. Joseph Catholic School in Greenville, Sinoe County, graduating at the top of his class, and received a high school diploma from the Bishop Ferguson High School in Maryland County, also at the top of his class.

Dr.Joseph Mills Jones earned Bachelor's degree in Economics from Cuttington College, now Cuttington University with the distinction of Magna Cum Laude while completing his studies in less than the prescribed four years.

He also holds Master's and doctorate degrees in economics from the prestigious American University in Washington DC, United States of America.

“Immediately after completing his studies, Dr. Jones returned home to the position of Assistant Minister of State for Presidential Affairs working on economic issues. He later joined the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs as Chief Economist and Special Assistant to the Minister of Planning and Economic Affairs. Dr. Jones has exemplified the values of honor and integrity at the international level as well”.

He served in senior positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. At the World Bank he was Alternate Executive Director for Africa Group 1 which was comprised of 22 African countries.

At home, he is well known for the initiatives that the Central Bank of Liberia has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Liberian economy. He was appointed Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia in 2006, and subsequently reappointed in 2011 to a second five-year term.

It further said the Central Bank under Dr. Jones' leadership has been particularly keen to promote Liberian entrepreneurship, through several programs directed at increasing access to financing for Liberian business.

His policies have also liberated members of the Liberian Marketing Association, Petty Traders Unions and women in the villages throughout Liberia through village savings and loan associations.

Dr. Jones has attended and lectured at several high level international conferences and has traveled extensively, which provides him with a wide range of experiences.

Dr. Joseph Mills Jones, there is no doubt his entire career has exemplified the spirit of excellence and leadership, first as an accomplished monetary technician, both at home and abroad and secondly, as a true servant of the Liberian people.

Dr. Jones has increased the national reserve from US$5.0 million in 2006 to over US$300 million as of August 2011. The banking system has improved significantly from US$2.0 million in 2005 to US$10.0 million in 2011. The CBL in collaboration with the Liberian Bankers Association (LBA) has established the Banking Institute of Liberia.

He has created Commercial Courts in the Country to adjudicate commercial contracts; has drafted a new Anti-Money Laundering Bill; is leading the national payments modernization project to modernize the payments system in Liberia; has established a Treasury Unit; continues to empower local businesses to create employment and much more. Under his leadership, the Microfinance Regulatory and Supervisory Framework is working successfully. Most importantly, all audits and safeguards assessments speak favorable about financial management and control under his leadership.
