Summertime '06 is the debut studio double album by American rapper Vince Staples; it was released on June 30, 2015, by Def Jam Recordings and ARTium Recordings. The album is produced mostly by Def Jam executive No I.D. and also features production from Clams Casino, DJ Dahi, Christian Rich, and Brian Kidd.[1]

Background

When Staples revealed he was working on an album, he said it would serve as a follow-up to Hell Can Wait (2014). He also said the album touches on these events, what happened in his life in the summer of 2006, at the age of 13 and onward. On June 8, 2015, Staples released the official artwork via instagram, while he wrote this message:

Love will tear us apart. Nov 30th, 2005 was the beginning of the loss. The following summer multiplied it. Beaten paths, crowded with the hopeless. Same song every day, listening to the words of a dead man destroyed by his own mind and body. Why? Because at the end of the day we’re all dead anyway. At least where I come from. Love tore us all apart. Love for self, love for separation, love for the little we all had, love for each other, where we came from. Jabari, Chris, Shard, Tom, Richy, Tyson, Tony, Shelly, Phil, Marcel, Brandon, Steve, Jaron, Tay. Too many to name, too much to forget. Some lost to prison, some lost to Forest Lawn, some turned snitch. Some still here but it will never be the same. Bandanas, Stealing Levis and Nike Sb’s. Derringers and Sidekicks. Its crazy how little you notice and how greatly those things impact. Summer of 2006, the beginning of the end of everything I thought I knew. Youth was stolen from my city that Summer and Im left alone to tell the story. This might not make sense but that's because none of it does, we're stuck. Love tore us all apart. Summertime ’06, June 30th.

Staples revealed the tracklist for disc 1 on his Twitter account on June 2, 2015, and disc 2 on June 6, 2015.

Music and lyrics

Summertime '06 is a concept album that details Staples's life at the age of 13 in the summertime of 2006, when he first started gangbaning and dealing physical, mental, and emotional issues. On the track "Lift Me Up", Staples reminisce on his past vices. On "Norf Norf" Vince reminisce on his adolescent years and the early days of gang banging. In "Birds & Bees", Staples talks about his first experience with death and dealing with the lost of someone close. On the song "Loca" and "Lemme Know", featuring labelmate Jhene Aiko and producer DJ Dahi, he speaks on love that he has found for a girl. On "Dopeman", Vince refers back to being a drug dealer and gangsta. On the song "Jump Off The Roof" featuring another labelmate Snoh Aagelra, he revisits his vices and being caught between love for his girlfriend, gangbaning, losing grip on dealing with death, and contemplating suicide. On "Senorita", Vince speaks on his dedication and commitment to being a Crip. On the song "Summertime" Vince vents on his love and emotional distress.

Promotion

On October 7, 2014, Staples released his debut EP titled Hell Can Wait. The EP has received critical acclaim from many mainstream critics, including Pitchfork Media, XXL and HipHopDX.[2][3] On June 21, 2015, Summertime '06 was made available for streaming on NPR First Listen.[4] During the week leading up to the albums release, Vince has an ice cream truck driving around Los Angeles and Long Beach, giving away free ice cream, beach balls and water bottles.

Singles

On May 4, 2015, Staples released "Señorita", as the first single from his debut album titled "Summertime '06".[5][6] The album's second single, "Get Paid" featuring guest appearances from Long Beach rapper Desi Mo, was released on June 15, 2015.

Summertime '06 was met with rave reviews, holding an average score of 87 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 20 reviews.[17] The 405 wrote of the album "Vince rapturously integrates dense and conscious-filled narratives of his inner life, packaged vibrantly over layered and unpredictable production". In a positive review, Complex wrote "Summertime '06's coming of age tale is complemented perfectly by production that finds the nuance in Staples' stories and matches it, couching Staples' rhymes in a way that the streets can understand best." RevCutt wrote "The beauty in this project is the aspects it brings as a whole, the streets it takes you down and the imagery it details all the while giving a perspective on important issues still happening in our society and providing a new and fresh sound." It was also given the "Best New Music" accolade by Pitchfork Media.

Commercial performance

The album debuted at number 39 on the chart, selling 14,000 copies.[18] It was the 20th highest selling album of the week.[19]
