John Carrafiell (born March 8, 1965)[1] is a Co-Founder of GreenOak Real Estate, a real estate-focused principal investing, lending and advisory firm that has raised over $3 billion.[2]

Education

Mr. Carrafiell received his B.A. from Yale University in 1987.[3]

Career

In 1987, after graduating from Yale, Carrafiell joined Morgan Stanley.[4] In 1994, he initiated Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds’ European investment program.[4] He subsequently became Head of Morgan Stanley’s European Real Estate Group in 1995.[4] Four years later Carafiell became a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley.[4] He was then appointed to Co-Head the Morgan Stanley Real Estate division, in 2005.[4] He also served as the President of the Special Situations Fund III[5] and was also a senior advisor at Morgan Stanley.[6]

In 2004, as the head of Morgan Stanley’s European Real Estate Group, Carrafiell led Morgan Stanley’s £1.7 billion takeover of Canary Wharf.[7] He stepped down as Co-Head of Morgan Stanley Real Estate to found Alpha Real Estate Advisors in 2008.[8] Alpha Real Estate advised in Songbird Estates PLC’s £1.03 billion recapitalization.[9]

In 2010 Carrafiell was a co-founder of GreenOak Real Estate, a private equity real estate firm with investments in New York, London, Tokyo and Spain.[10][2]

Directorships

Mr. Carrafiell is currently serving on the Supervisory Board of Klepierre.[11]

He previously sat on the Management Board of the European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA)[12] and on the Supervisory Boards of Corio[11] and Deutsche Immobilien Chancen Group.[13] Carrafiell also served as a Trustee of the Urban Land Institute[14] and as a Director of the Canary Wharf Group[15] and Grupo Lar.[16]

Philanthropy

Mr. Carrafiell is a Sterling Fellow of Yale,[1] and established scholarship and teaching funds to support students, teaching, and research at the Yale School of Architecture[3] He also established a scholarship fund for the Yale School of Art.[17] He is a member of the Yale President’s Development Council and the Yale School of Architecture Deans’ Council[1] Carrafiell served in the past on the Executive Committee of the Yale Tomorrow campaign.[1]

Carrafiell is a supporter of the Ever Episcopal Campaign[18] and is a member of the Tate Modern (London) Acquisitions Committee.[19]
