Daisy Jazz Isobel Ridley (born 10 April 1992)[2] is an English actress. She appears in the lead role of Rey in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Early life

Ridley was born in Westminster, London. Her great-uncle was actor and playwright Arnold Ridley, of Dad's Army fame.[3] She attended Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire, graduating in 2010.[4][5]

Career

Ridley has appeared in the television programmes Youngers, Silent Witness, Mr Selfridge and Casualty.[6][7][8][9] She also appeared in the short film "Blue Season," which was entered into the Sci-Fi-London 48-Hour Film Challenge.[10] She played the lead in film three of "Lifesaver,"[11] an interactive film which was nominated for a BAFTA British Academy Award.[12] She has also appeared in the music video for Wiley's song "Lights On".[4][13]

In April 2014, it was announced that she would play Rey, one of the lead characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.[6][7][8][14][15] She was chosen for the film in February 2014.[16] The casting of Ridley has generally been seen as a move by director J. J. Abrams to repeat the casting of relatively unknown actors for the lead roles as George Lucas did with the first Star Wars film in 1977.[17] At the time of her casting she was, according to Rolling Stone, a "total unknown,"[18] and according to Inc., had no IMDB bio, no Wikipedia article, and just a few hundred Twitter followers.[19] In October 2015, Ridley appeared at the launch of a set of Star Wars postage stamps issued by the UK postal service Royal Mail, with Ridley's character Rey featuring in a stamp along with her droid companion BB-8.[20] June 2015 Variety Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
