Bot update?

Hey, it's me checking in on the Mexican TV stations bot. How are we coming on that front? There are some major station shutoffs coming next month and I would like to be ready. More than 120 stations are jumping from December 11 through the 17th. Raymie (tc) 02:34, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Raymie: Hi, Raymie. Sorry for not updating you. The script is finished and has begun final testing and I'm patching a few minor bugs that I found. My goal is to have a BAG request in by next week. I'm still adhering to the December 1st deadline and I believe things are still going smoothly to hit that deadline. Thanks, -24Talk 03:23, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's great! Raymie (tc) 03:26, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Bot testing is continuing, I got a bit behind but I plan on submitting a BAG request tomorrow while the last pieces get put into place (I'll mention that this is urgent).
Right now I want fill you in on what this bot will do. First, it checks if the old redirect exists and quits if it doesn't. It then checks whether the old redirect is a double redirect. If it is, it uses the destination of the next/double redirect in order to resolve that redirect. Next, it checks whether the new redirect exists and if it is a redirect or not. If it is a redirect and points to the same destination as the old redirect, it proceeds as normal. If its a redirect and doesn't point to the same destination or isn't a redirect, it quits to preserve the original content. Next, it finds all pages with links pointing to the old redirect and replaces the link with a link to the new redirect.
Let me know if this is what is expected or if I should change some of the behavior. After the BAG request is complete and full official testing is done, we should be ready to start creating a list of the redirects that should be moved and at what times. I know you want this done as soon as possible when the stations make their switch. Thanks, -24Talk 05:09, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I take it that the bot creates the new redirect, e.g. XHGN-TDT? Then we should be good.
If you want to test, use the stations from the December 11 shutoff round. These are: XHFEC-TV, XHPAC-TV, XHPFC-TV, XHPFE-TV, XHAE-TV, XHLLO-TV, XHRCG-TV, XHSCE-TV, XHSTC-TV, XHWDT-TV, XHCCG-TV, XHMAS-TV, XHOPCE-TV, XHLEG-TV, XHLEJ-TV, XHLGG-TV, XHLGT-TV, XHL-TV, XHOPLA-TV, XEZ-TV, XHQCZ-TV, XHQUE-TV, XHQUR-TV, XHZ-TV, XHCBO-TV, XHSVT-TV, XHAPT-TV.
This will allow you to test a variety of cases. XHRCG and XHLEG have their own articles, and the others are redirects. XHAE has its own edit history but is now a redirect. Raymie (tc) 05:45, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Yes, the bot creates the new redirect if it doesn't exist with the same destination that the old redirect pointed to.
Those -TV stations go to the -TDT suffix, right? There aren't any exceptions? -24Talk 05:57, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. At the end of things, almost every article that begins in "XE" or "XH" and ends in "-TV" will end in "-TDT". There are a couple of defunct stations that won't: XHJMA-TV, XHEW-TV and XELD-TV, for instance. There might also be some stations that don't transition. Raymie (tc) 06:08, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: That should work fine then. The script works on redirects specified by ordered pairs of old redirects to new redirects in a file; so, if it isn't in the file it won't be moved. -24Talk 06:16, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: What namespaces would you like this bot to operate on for changing the old redirect references to new redirect? For example, XHFEC-TV is referenced in the main, user, and template namespaces (including some of your user pages). I would recommend that the bot not operate in user and talk namespaces as that is preserved for historical purposes but it might still be useful to have it operate in the main and template namespaces. I'm just checking that this is what you intend. -24Talk 05:33, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, do the main and template namespaces. There are some templates that need updating of this type as well, like {{Saltillo TV}}. Not many, but enough to have the thing run in that namespace.
If possible, I'd like to do testing with the 12/11 station batch as that is going to be urgent. They are doing these at midnight at the start of the day in question. Raymie (tc) 07:06, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Alright, I'll set it to the main and template namespaces.
I'm fine with starting some tests with the latest batch. I just need a list of the redirects to move and what to move them to. Then I'll post the results. For your information, I will be submitting the BAG request today. -24Talk 16:35, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's the list earlier in this conversation, beginning with XHFEC-TV. They each need to be changed out to end in -TDT instead of TV (e.g. XHFEC-TDT, XHPAC-TDT...). Raymie (tc) 17:53, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Ah, yes. Just making sure. I'm going to setup a consensus page to gather the consensus for this task just to make sure the BAG goes as smoothly as possible. Once the page is up, could you get a few key people that usually work on these pages to add approval to it? -24Talk 18:05, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There aren't many, so I'll kinda be alone on this... Raymie (tc) 18:40, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: If its just you editing the pages then it should be fine. -24Talk 19:49, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: I have submitted the BRFA. Could you take a look over it to make sure it is correct? And could you also review User:Bot24/Tasks/Task 3 and then add your signature to the consensus section? Thanks, -24Talk 04:21, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've done that. I've also left a little more detail on the scale of the operation in the BRFA. Raymie (tc) 04:52, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Thank you for your information. I may make some small modifications to the script as necessary but now the BRFA is the only thing holding this. Thanks, -24Talk 05:05, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Another batch, the first for 12/31 is here. I'm expecting more of these to come in before 12/31 as they verify how many TVs they delivered on their welfare rolls. Ignore anything that says (complementaria). Raymie (tc) 04:29, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Would you be around for a trial in about 4 hours? I'm thinking about possible doing the first batch at that time after everything is ok. -24Talk 23:53, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly! One thing to watch out for. If you have "XHDWT-TV" in your lists as it is in the IFT docs, that's a misspelling. It should be XHWDT-TV. Raymie (tc) 23:58, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: I'll work off of the list you have above. I haven't had a chance to fully comprehend the docs you sent me. Also, are you on IRC in #wikipedia connect or something like it? I would be better if I had full instantaneous communication during the trial. If you are on IRC could you ping me in ##bot24 connect? Thanks, -24Talk 02:10, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I miss this, and now I'm in there alone. :/ Raymie (tc) 04:49, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference, 12/31 batch 2. 141 stations in 19 states on top of the 99 already cleared to go: [1] Raymie (tc) 23:39, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We were cleared! I'd like to run all 387 stations in one batch on 12/30 or 12/31. Let me know what you want to do. Raymie (tc) 05:01, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, lets plan on tomorrow same time as the trial. I'm going to be going on vacation in two days (glad this was approved before then) for three days but we should be able to get this done before then. -24Talk 21:12, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! I've also prepared a list of the stations that will be going, too, to share when we run the bot. Updated count is 378 as several repeaters were listed alone. Raymie (tc) 22:05, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: Actually could we instead do Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 9:00 PM UTC? And could I get that list ahead of time so I can convert it to the correct format?
Just a warning, this may take a couple of hours because of the throttling. -24Talk 03:34, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. By the way, the station list (see User:Raymie/StationList) has gone up to 410 because the IFT dumped a few dozen more stations in today. There are still a couple of areas that haven't shown up in any of their authorizations (portions of Chiapas and Oaxaca), and for some reason they didn't do all stations in certain areas in this last one. Not every station is going now because they gave a break to some really cash-strapped public broadcasters. I don't mind the edits taking time — this is why it's being done now! Raymie (tc) 07:58, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok as long as the changes are reflected in that list. I'll just have the bot do what you give me on that page. -24Talk 14:10, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymie: I'm actually available right now and for about three more hours (sorry, crazy day). Do you want to start the bot run as soon as I finish processing the list? -24Talk 18:10, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
