Cobra Starship is the side project of Midtown's singer Gabe Saporta. He has offered several reasons for its name. In an interview with Buzzine.com, Saporta offered that the project's name came from a jacket he had with the word "Cobra" on it and from another jacket he had that said "Starship Disco." Rock Sound magazine reported, however, that the name is a subtle play on the name "Jefferson Starship" which was formerly known as "Jefferson Airplane;" substituing "Cobra" for Jefferson, the name would be "Cobra Airplane"--a reference to the band's first single, "Snakes on a Plane (Bring it)."
Saporta, along with William Beckett of The Academy Is..., Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, and Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds recently completed shooting a music video for the upcoming Snakes on a Plane movie. Their song, Snakes on a Plane (Bring It), will be featured on the upcoming Snakes On A Plane: The Album, to be released on August 15, 2006.
Cobra Starship has also been known for singing the song Hollaback Boy which is a parody of Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani. [1]
