Bernard (Bernie) Fernand Ripoll was born on the 6th January 1966 in Pezenas, Herault, France and emigrated to Australia with his family at the age of 6. Bernie was educated at the Queensland University of Technology and is a qualified electrician. Bernie worked as an aircraft electrician with the Royal Australian Air Force. Bernie also worked as an organiser with the State Public Services Federation of Queensland (now known as the Queensland Public Sector Union) before entering politics.

Bernie was elected as the Labor member to the House of Representatives representing the Division of Oxley, Queensland in 1998.

The seat had been held by Pauline Hanson, who formed One Nation after winning the normally safe Labor seat of Oxley in 1996 as an independent. Prior to the election, Oxley was divided in half, with most of the old Oxley's more rural territory shifted to the new Division of Blair. The reconfigured Oxley had a notional Labor majority of 51 percent.

Hanson decided to contest the latter division instead of Oxley as she believed this would improve her chances. Former Queensland Premier Wayne Goss had already been preselected as Labor candidate, but a brain tumour forced him to retire from politics, and Ripoll was named in his place.[3]

Bernie was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer in March 2012 and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Small Business in March 2013. Following the election of the Coalition in September 2013, Bernie was appointed as Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation, Shadow Minister Assisting the Leader on Small Business and Shadow Minister for Sport. In April 2015 he announced he was not re-contesting the election for the seat of Oxley and on the 15 September 2015, resigned from the Shadow Cabinet[1]
