Filip Gilissen, (born in Brussels, Belgium, 1980) is a Belgian artist. He lives and works in Brussels.[1]

Biography and works

Using the language of commerce, marketing and media representation, Gilissen gives a comment on the more cynical aspects of globalization and consumer driven politics. He explores through events, performances, and installations, the one-liners of the spectacle industry. As rances Loeffler puts it in an earlier article about Gilissen's work, it is in his work 'The notion of being on the 'up' and pushing it far and hard enough until it starts to collapse and ring hollow'.

The work of Gillissen stands in an under-researched tradition of art that sarcastically celebrates the uncelebratable: a tradition that may be said to have begun with the famous case of the in-house string quartet stoically, even cheerfully playing on while the Titanic was busy sinking to the bottom of the ocean; a tradition that has thrived especially well in the ultra-cynical ‘post-political’ era of globalization."
