Stephen Peel
Stephen Peel (born 29 December 1965) is a British businessman, private equity investor and philanthropist who until 2014 was one of the senior partners at the global private equity firm TPG Capital.[1] He has now founded the nonprofit, policy development think tank, SMP Policy Innovation Ltd.
Career
Peel worked at Goldman Sachs from 1989, founded TPG's European operations in 1997, ran their Russian and Eastern European operations from 2006 and co-headed the Asia operations from 2009-2013.[2] He also co-founded the philanthropic Private Equity Foundation (now Impetus PEF) and sits on the board of Lenta Limited.[3] In 2016, Peel founded SMP Policy Innovation, a not-for-profit organisation aiming to promote, design and assist advanced government policy.[4][5]
Stephen serves as a British member of the Trilateral Commission and is a visiting fellow at the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University. He sits on the board of Global Witness[6], Right to Play Asia and on the Advisory Boards of the Open Contracting Partnership and the Institute for State Effectiveness. He is also a member of the Partners Council for the economic think tank The Institute for New Economic Thinking,[7] is on the Advisory Council at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs at Yale University[8] and the Tate International Council.
Personal life
Peel studied at Downing College, Cambridge University. In 2015 he did an MAS at the Jackson Institute of Global Affairs at Yale University.[8] He represented Great Britain in rowing at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. His wife, Yana Peel, is the CEO of the Serpentine Galleries in London.
