Sangram Chougule a professional bodybuilder and entrepreneur, was in the city recently to inaugurate a health and nutritional supplements outlet. Belgaum Times caught up with him for a freewheeling chat on his inspiration and aspirations.

My family is very supportive. Ours is a vegetarian household, but my mother allowed Non-vegetarian food at home for me. My wife Snehal is my biggest motivator; She has been my side in the Good time and Bad time. I have been able to achieve all this only because of her. Bodybuilders usually retire after getting married, But I won all my biggest titles after I took the Plunge. -Sangram Chougule

Bodybuilding - Fateful Accident I am from the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, and both my parents were school teachers. Bodybuilding Happens to me by accident. My father always wanted me to be one, but I never considered it. I moved to Pune to pursue an Aeronautical Engineering degree in 1999. It was same time that I was joined Gym, but I did not want to be a bodybuilder then. In 2006 I won my first competition, but it wasn't until 2010, when I won my first Mr India title, that I decided to become a professional bodybuilder.

2012: The Turning Point In 2011, I won my first international medal - bronze at the Mr Asia competition that was held in Bangkok. The same year, I bagged another bronze medal at Mr Universe in Malaysia. Then in 2012, I won the most precious title in bodybuilding I was crowned Mr Universe. That was the most memorable day of my bodybuilding carrer, considering that just three months prior of that, I won the medal at Mr Asia. I then went on to win all the biggest titles in India the same year.

The Injury halt I tore a leg muscle in 2013, due to which I had stop competing for two years, That was the worse phase of my career. But my wife, family, and friends believed in me and motivated me to bounce back, due to which I won the Mr World title in 2015, and all the other major titles in 2014 & 2015, including Mr India. The year 2014 was made even more special because that is when my daughter was born. She is my lucky charm.

Motivation My father was the first person to motivate me, Bodybuilding is an expensive sports, and being a primary school teachers it wasn't easy to fund it, but he did a lot for me. I also very lucky to support of our federation the Indian bodybuilders and Physique Federation. but I am very unlucky when it comes to having a trainer and coach now someone who can help me get to next level.

During the time, he wants to bulk up on muscle, he works out for three hours. When the competition season is on, he work out for about 4-5 hours. He combines strength and cardio exercises to build muscle and to avoid fat. He also does running and does yoga sometimes to balance the workout. His daily diet is focused around 5-6 solid meals containing different sources of proteins, carbohydrates and fats and then 2-3 protein shakes. Shakes are used when his body requires quick replenishment like post workout or the first thing in the morning

As a part of his daily diet, Sangram ensures an optimum intake of protein with less carbs and less fat.

He says it's wrong to skip meals and then do numerous crunches because that would result in only muscle loss. Abs are made in the kitchen, all you need to do is control your calorie intake and take a well-balanced diet with a proper workout routine.

Sangram Chougule on Bodybuilding Myths

Sangram the bodybuilder is committed to dispelling bodybuilding myths. Spot reduction is the biggest myth and many people when they begin to train, do innumerable crunches without food to build six-pack abs. Similarly, many people think that muscles will become flabby in the old age, which is not true. Strength training is the true fountain of remaining young and two-times Mr. Olympia winner Frank Zane is a living testimony of it.

For Sangram there is no age limit in bodybuilding, He has trained people as old as 60, what matters is your will to train hard.
