Moar hom or mo hom is a type of Thai traditional cloth. The word “ Moar Hom” is a word from northern Thai language: “moar” means pot and “hom” is a name of a plant that people use their trunk and leaf and leave it into water to produce the deep blue dye clot.

History

Moar hom cloth is the name of cloth that has a deep blue color developed after World War II in Phare. In the past, moar hom was a handmade weaving cloth that uses cotton to make fabric and a loom to weave the white cloth. Then it is sewn to make shirts and trousers in various designs. After that, it is dyed in hom water. Presently, fewer people are using loom for weaving because it is expensive, so they use readymade cloth from the factory and dye it with hom water or synthetic color.

Manufacturing

The first step for making Moar Hom cloth is make Hom water by binding Hom leaf and trunk in to the water and leave it 2 for days. Then take the Hom out and mix with lime water and whip it to make a bubble then continue to fill lime water and whip it till bubble has blue color. Leave it to precipitate. Then pour it into the pot and dye the cloth then leave it dry in the sun for the final process.

Production

The biggest source of production in Thailand is in Baan Thung Hong, Thung Hong district, Phare. The places where you can buy Moar Hom cloth are areas around Phare and traditional markets around Thailand.

Style

The first style of Moar Hom cloth is original style or traditional style (T-shirt that have to buttons up or tie rope}. This type has both of long and short sleeve styles. And the other one it has been redesigned to be trendier for new generation.
