History
Kareela is derived from an Aboriginal word kari-kari meaning fast. The name for the suburb was approved by the Geographical Names Board in 1968 and it was chosen in reference to the area’s strong south winds. The strong breezes are also reflected in the street name, Tradewinds Place. Kareela also has a shopping centre. Popular shops include Coles, Chicken Ace, The Newsagent and Video Ezy. They also have a doctor's surgery called Kareela Family Practice.
