Created by Jerry Koudelik, also known as Sprite Monkey, Secret of Mana Theater is a Sprite-based, Flash animated webcomic that is a parody of Seiken Densetsu 2, which was called Secret of Mana in the United States. The comic debuted on May 15 2002.

Main plot

Template:Spoiler

The main character is Seth, who is the Mana Knight and is always messing up things. He grew up in Potos village, but is banished after pulling out the Mana Sword. He then reluctantly begins the quest to protect Mana from the Empire and Thanatos and has managed to survive despite many blows to the head and a completely foolish and gullible personality.

Along the way Seth meets Fawn, who is trying to save Dyluck, whom she loves. Fawn is an extremely deft fighter but thinks of Seth as a complete wimp. We also meet Autumn, the sprite, who originally swindled Seth out of thousands of gold pieces along with the Dwarven Elder. After the Elder betrays her and is eaten by Tropicallo, Autumn joins Seth's group in the attempt to recover her memory and partially because she regrets deceiving Seth.

Seth receives hints about his quest from a divine stack of pancakes. As bizarre as this seems, it is a key point in Secret of Mana Theater.

In the game, Randi corresponds to Seth, Purim to Fawn, and Popoie to Autumn. In addition, although Popoie was male, the author saw the sprite as female so Autumn is female instead.

Characters

Main characters

  • Seth - Seth is the Mana Knight. He is the fulfiller of an ancient prophecy which states that the Mana Knight will claim the Mana Sword and save the world. Seth is easily fooled, and quite naive; however, he is also trusting and very good-hearted.
  • Fawn - Fawn is a young noblewoman out to save her boyfriend Dyluck from the witch Elinee. Her attitude of violent coercion and tough love does not sit well with Seth's blissful absentmindedness.
  • Autumn - Autumn is a sprite child. She meets Seth in the Dwarf Village. Due to a rather unfortunate encounter with a Midge Hammer, Autumn is indefinitely midged, and initially joins Seth to find a cure.

Supporting characters

  • Jema - Jema, knight of the Republic and hero of the resistance, has to put up with Seth's rather odd antics. He has a condescending personality that does not fit well with Seth.
  • Pancake - Not much is known about Pancake. Pancake is a divine being that aids Seth in his journey. In a more classical setting, such as an epic, Pancake would be considered the 'deus ex machina' of Secret of Mana Theater; however, his role in the story is quite limited.
  • Elinee - The evil witch. Elinee hypnotizes Fawn's boyfriend, General Dyluck, and keeps him as her prisoner. Elinee is quite important to the story, even if she doesn't get much screen time. Over 150 episodes of Secret of Mana Theater have been spent chasing her. She has a tragic past; due to her kindly attitude, other noblewomen had her family sent to prison on fraudulent charges of treason, and she herself was banished from the kingdom. She met Thanatos, and while summoning the Fire Gigas to destroy Pandora, he killed her.
  • Luka - Sage Luka is the guardian of the Water Palace, and has been watching over the seeds of Mana for over two hundred years. She helps set Seth off on his journey as the Mana Knight, and is the first to definitively convince him of his destiny.
  • Seymour - Formerly a quasi-successful gardener of Dwarf Village, after helping to defeat Tropicallo with his expertise with munitions, Seymour was elected the new Dwarf Elder.
  • Watts - Albeit a skilled dwarven blacksmith, Watts is not often in town.
  • Mittens - Formerly the witch Elinee's beloved pet spiked tiger, Mittens was midged by Fawn in battle, and spent several episodes tailing our heroes. He was finally adopted by Seth with some persuasion from fellow feline Neko, due to his efforts in helping to save Fawn and Autumn from some hungry trolls.
  • Neko - A purple anthropomorphic feline merchant, Neko is a veritable businessman through and through. Although he will sometimes lend a hand to travellers in need, they soon learn that every cat has his price.
  • Henry - A good-natured rosebud who helps Seth sneak into Elinee's castle. Although his initial encounter with Seth was a violent one, Henry has proven himself a skilled and valuable ally.
  • The Chobin Hood Gang - A quintet of archers who once preyed on hapless adventurers in the woods near Elinee's castle, the Chobin Hood gang were finally convinced by Autumn to modify their enterprise: they now spend their days stealing from the rich to give to the poor, in order to boost their status among the popular masses.
  • Undine - Undine is a water elemental, the ethereal personification of all water-related phenomena. She was imprisoned by the Scorpion Gang in Pandora Castle within a special contraption that generated ice and frost within which the town was blanketed. Following her rescue by Seth and company, she bestowed Fawn with the restorative powers of water, Autumn with the combative powers of water, and Seth with a mysterious tome that once belonged to a great sage.
  • Timothy - A friend of Seth who resides in Potos Village, Timothy is often the victim of unfortunate and violent mishaps.
