Oscar Efrén Reyes (June 13, 1896, Baños – December 6, 1966, Quito), was a historian, journalist, politician, investigator and an Ecuadorian teacher. He is remembered for his teachings as well as the historic investigation of Ecuador and America.

Early life and education

Reyes was born in Baños, Tungurahua Province on June 13, 1896, the only child of María Petronila Reyes Noboa.[1][2][3] His father was a arriero (muleteer),[3] and his grandparents, Francisco Reyes Hidalgo y Regina Noboa, owned a farm called La Escudilla.[1][3] In 1909, Reyes' mother passed away from cancer.[1][3] After the death of his mother, he was placed in the care of his uncle and aunt, Juan Reyes Noboa and Rosita Romo de Reyes.[1]

Eventually he received education in grammar and mathematics, paid for by a Dominican priest who had admired the literary knowledge of Reyes at the age of 15.[3] After two years of instruction and study, and under the watch of the parish priest Fray Juan Halflants, the Dominican priest, the young sixteen year old Reyes started his work as a teacher of children, who still remember him for his introversion and kindness, in the city of Baños.[3]

In 1914, with a scholarship of the State,[3] Reyes enrolled at the Normal Juan Montalvo.[2] He graduated in 1916 with the highest distinction.[1][3]

Death

Reyes died in the city of Quito in the early morning of December 1, 1966,[1][2][3] in "Hospital Militar".[3] His remains were moved to Baños, his birthplace, on June 13, 1985.
