Ramón Ortiz[1] (June 15, 1970) is a Puerto Rican guitarist and composer, best known as a founder member and director of the band Puya and Ankla[2]. The company Fernandes Guitars built a guitar with a patented ying-yang tribal design in a 7 strings model according to his personal specifications[3]. Ramón is a visionary and pioneer of the Latin metal movement internationally. Ortiz was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He started the guitar at age seven. Son and grandson of the guitar and the Puerto Rican’s cuatro. He studied classical guitar at the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico during his adolescence.


Puya

Ramón founded Puya[4], which continues to be one of the most notable bands in Latin America, winner of the Latin Billboard Awards[5] for Best Rock Album with his album Fundamental. In 1999, Puya signed with MCA / Universal Records, and recorded the album Fundamental, produced by Gustavo Santaolaya and Bob Ezrin. Ortiz has been touring as a Puya guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Pantera, System of a Down and many others. It was at that time, Ortiz realized that heavy rock and Latin music could coexist within the same musical terrain.

Ankla

Later on his career Ramón founded a heavier band on the metal genre, Ankla. In 2006, the band was signed by Bieler Brothers and released their first album "Steep Trails", produced by Ortiz and Bob Marlette. In 2007, Ankla made a tour with Ozzfest. The single "Deceit" was in heavy rotation on Sirius Satellite's "Hard Attack". "Steep Trails" was published as number 12 on Revolver Magazine's list of "Top Metal Albums of 2006".[6]

Solo Album

In 2012 Ramon released his first solo album by the name "Ortiz"[7]. It contains 13 tracks and was produced by Nick Page and Ramón himself. Mixed and mastered by Alexis Pérez. His second solo album Portal was released on September 15, 2015 and has a more progressive sound than its predecessor . Stylistically this stage his career, following the line of his fusion of rock and heavy metal trends Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Now for him, everything is more centered around the guitar and its commitment with his main instrument. Both albums have been favorites of the Liquid Metal radio station of Sirius Satellite Radio[8]. Currently, Ramon resides in Puerto Rico and remains occupied as a guitar teacher, composing his third solo album, performing solo shows and sporadic meetings of the Puya, among other projects. Firm believer in musical alchemy and continues to seek new developments for his fusion. His next solo album promises to be heavier and more aggressive than his predecessors.

Signature Guitar

In 2010 Fernandes Guitars[9] contracted Lutier Alejndro Lagos to build a specialized 7-string guitar designed by Ramon Ortiz called the RO76. It was co-designed and customized by Ortiz himself. Seymour Duncan Pick-Ups[10] are part of electronics. The design is black and white with its patented graphic of ying yang tribal and Taino coqui symbols all over the fretboard. markers[11]. It is also currently sponsored by Mesa Boogie amplifiers and D'Addario strings.[12][13].
