Andy Couturier (born June 3, 1964) is the American author of two books, Writing Open the Mind: Tapping the Subconscious to Free the Writing and the Writer (Ulysses Press, 2005)[1] and A Different Kind of Luxury: Japanese Lessons in Simple Living and Inner Abundance[2] (Stone Bridge Press, 2010). The forthcoming The Abundance of Less (North Atlantic Books, 2017)[3] is a revised and updated edition of his previous work. He is the founder and creative director for The Opening, a center for creative writing. His essays and articles on ecology, sustainable living, and the problems inherent with nuclear power have appeared in The Japan Times,[4] The North American Review,[5] Adbusters, Kyoto Journal,[6] The Oakland Tribune, and Creative NonFiction.

He was born in New York, New York, United States, and grew up in Washington D.C. and Chicago. He is a graduate of the English composition MA program at San Francisco State University, and lived in Japan for four years. He runs a private writing school, The Opening,[7] in Oakland, California, and also teaches in Santa Cruz.
