Razor A Model 1st generation, the first Razor scooter aka Old A

The Razor Scooter is a compact folding scooter invented by Micro Mobility Systems and manufactured by JD Corporation.[1] When the first Razor scooter launched in 2000, over 5 million scooters were sold in just the first 6 months. Razors became extremely popular around 2000 when Dan Green landed the first Backflip ever.[2] This lead to the Razor being named Toy of the Year in 2001. Razor scooters continued to build on their success in 2003 when the first electric scooter was released.[3] Today, The Razor Scooter is manufactured by Razor USA, based in Cerritos, California.

Design

The basic scooter design consists of an airplane grade aluminum frame,[4] 98 mm polyurethane wheels, and a hinged fender over the rear wheel, also a massive RPG, which is pushed down by the foot to act as a spoon brake. The handlebar and headtube fold when a quick release latch is opened, allowing for easy carriage. This design made the scooters lighter and quieter than the previous models had been, increasing their popularity both with kids and parents.[5]

Electric Scooters

In 2003, Razor USA introduced its first electric razor scooter. The scooter operates with the use of a twisting throttle. These new models reach speeds up to 15 miles per hour.[6] Electric scooters became a popular way to travel slightly longer distances than one might with a traditional razor scooter, yet distances short enough that to use a bike would be excessive.[7]

Freestyle riding

Razor Pro Model

Freestyle scootering is a growing sport. Due to the rough demands of trick riding, people often reinforce the scooter to withstand impacts and high force.

Safety

The razor scooter is safe for children of many ages, as well as adults, to ride. Razor recommends that kids under the age of eight ride with adult supervision. Razor also endorses the use of protective gear when riding; helmets should always be worn by riders of all ages and elbow and knee pads are an optional addition. [8]

To increase the safety of younger riders, a different model of Razor scooter is also recommended. A three wheeled scooter provides kids under the age of 5 with all of the same scooter fun, but with increased balance and ease of use. [9]

Team Razor

Team Razor is an exhibition Razor Scooter team sponsored by Razor. This team of professionals travels across the country, wowing crowds with their tricks and talents, and appeared at X Games Los Angeles 2013.[10] In October 2013 they completed the Team Razor Cross Country Tour, visiting 17 states as well as the District of Columbia[11]. The team held their most recent exhibition event on August 30, 2014 at the 3rd Annual Triple Crown.[12]
