NGC 4993 (also catalogued as NGC 4994) is an elliptical galaxy in the constellation Hydra, discovered in 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel[1]. In August 2017, astronomers reported[2] that a gamma-ray burst, named GRB 170817A, that may have been emitted in the collision of two neutron stars, was detected and observed in this galaxy; a rumored[3] possible new kind of gravitational wave[4], tentatively named GW170817, might also have been detected, which could have been a result of this collision.
