Searx is a free search engine[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10], available under a GNU Affero General Public License version 3, with the aim of protecting the privacy of its users[11][12][13][14], not sharing user's IP and search history with the search engines and blocking tracking cookies from them[15][16][17]. Specifically, it is a meta-search engine, inspired by the Seeks project[18]. Unlike the latter, however, it does not yet have the possibility of transmitting the best peer-to-peer results. It features integrated proxy and cache links next to results, tabbed searches for files, images, IT, maps, music, news, science, social media, videos[19][20]. It's based on instances run by users. A service called Searxes[21] can be used to randomly search on other instances search randomly on other instances. Searx.me is also available as Tor hidden service.

Search engines

Searx fetches search results from about 70 different search engines[22]; it is possible to modify the default categories, engines and search language via the search query[23] by putting symbols below before the query

  • Category/engine prefix: !
  • Language prefix: :
  • Prefix to add engines and categories to the currently selected categories: ?

Major implemented search engines are Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Wikipedia, Reddit.

Instances

Every user can run his own instance of Searx[24][25][26], which is strictly recommended[27][28][29]. All public instances are visible on an editable list[30]. It is also possible to customize the search engines configuration[31] and a public API is available[32][33][34]
