The Chennaiyin FC Fans are the official fan club of the Indian Super League team, Chennaiyin FC. They are referred to as the "Supermachans". They are one of the biggest football fan clubs in Tamil Nadu and are known for promoting football culture in the state. The name "Supermachans" was coined by the co-owner of Chennaiyin FC, Abhishek Bachchan.

Origin

The club was formed midway during the first season of ISL by two football fans who regularly attended every Chennaiyin FC match at home. Two more joined them within weeks and by the end of the season, they were around 20 in number.

After the end of the first season, they were recognised by Chennaiyin FC and from then on they've been associated with the club. They teamed up with the club for the first time during the Grassroots[1] development program in early 2015 and there has been no turning back after that. The fan club is known for supporting the club and the players both on and off the field.[2]

Growth

Chennaiyin FC had brought football fans from all around the state together, and once news of the existence of a fan club spread, fans started joining in numbers. Before the beginning of the second season, there were over 300 members. Currently, after three seasons, there are around 500. They have been with the club during its ups and downs.[3]

They had a meeting with the club's co-owner, Abhishek Bachchan, last season where future plans for the fan club were discussed.[4]

Activities

Stadium presence

The Chennaiyin FC Fans-Supermachans block is the loudest in the Marina Arena with fans chanting for their team throughout the match.[5] They create an extraordinary atmosphere to both the fans and players with chants, huge banners, tifos, colours and their very own trophy replica.[6][7]

Interactive Live chats with players

They conduct interactive live chats with the players on their social media handles (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). The players who have gone live so far are Nallappan Mohan Raj,[8] Bernard Mendy [9] Jayesh Rane[10] and Mehrajudin Wadoo.

Social causes

They also organize events for social causes. On June 10, 2017, they planted saplings at Dazzling Stone Orphanage, Kundrathur. This was an attempt to add more trees to the city that had lost a majority of its green cover during the cyclone, Vardah. They had also conducted an origami session for the kids at the orphanage on the same day.

They also partnered with the Chennai Trekking Club for the Chennai Coastal CleanUp event which was held on June 18 and cleaned the beach along with 4000 other volunteers from various organisations.[11]

On July 15, 2017, the Supermachans gave a golden opportunity to the underprivileged kids to learn the art of freestyling from Rahul Raja of PR Soccer Art who is also a Guinness Record Holder. The intention of the program was to provide an opportunity to talented young under-reached kids to learn from the best mentor in the city. Approximately 40 underprivileged kids from Chetpet and Pallavaram gathered at the MCC School ground in Chetpet for the session that went for nearly 2 hours.[12][13]

Fan Anthem

As a tribute to the club winning the championship the previous season, they released the first ever fan anthem for Chennaiyin FC during ISL-3. It was titled “Thara Local Fan Anthem” and had a peppy tune. Directed by Brothers Creation, the video was shot along the Elliot’s beach.

Flashmob

They did a flash mob at Grand Mall[14][15] on October 1, 2017 to spread the news of Chennaiyin FC representing the city in ISL and to urge the people of Chennai to come to the stadium and support the team. It was choreographed by Ashwin Richard of Splashers Dance Crew and Vijay TV’s Kings of Dance finalist, Mutants.

Airport reception

It’s their custom to welcome their team at the airport[16] when they arrive in the city before the beginning of every season.[17] This is done in the traditional South Indian style with garlands,[18] 'kumkumam' and 'velaku'.[19]

The players' reception ahead of the second season is the best so far as over 300 Supermachans gathered at the airport around midnight. After 3 hours of waiting, when the players arrived at 3:00am, they were received with great pomp and joy by the fans.[20]

This time, they gathered at midnight to welcome their new coach, John Gregory. The coach was gobsmacked at such a reception.[21]

Travelling Fans

The Supermachans travel to other cities to support Chennaiyin FC in their away games, most notably for the South Indian derby against Kerala. Recently, they travelled to Bengaluru to support the Indian Football team in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers[22]
